'Hurricane hunters' fly through Milton as it barrels towards Florida

A team of 'hurricane hunters' from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) flew through Milton as the category 4 hurricane barrelled towards Florida's coast.

The team from NOAA gathered data on the storm, which is expected to be one of the worst to hit the US in decades. Joe Biden warned that evacuation orders for residents in the storm's path were a matter of 'life and death' as he announced that he had cancelled his trips to Germany and Angola to remain in the US as the storm hit.

NOAA was flying an old P-3 Orion, not a C-130 Hercules. You can tell by the short wings, the type of turbo engines and the narrow fuselage with much less headroom. The inside of a C-130 would be larger to house cargo.

You can tell the difference between the civilian NOAA scientists and the military crew flying a hurricane hunter mission. NOAA civilians don’t secure lose objects on the plane as they fly through a hurricane, like zipping his pocket shut with his mobile phone and wallet. In front of the plane one of the NOAA scientists was using his hand to hold down his drink/food cooler.

Judging by the spinning propellers they're only doing about thirty miles an hour so it's hardly surprising that the ride is a bit raggedy.
