Twilight Princess' Zelda claims that "ancient sages" created the Master Sword. Does Skyward Sword disprove this?

Always loved that master sword opening up scene

It could very well be that through time the true origins of the sword faded and skewed. I’m mean don’t most people just think that Ganon, the hero, and the master sword are myth? Even normal stories change through out the ages, meanings lost and details changed.

I think a good way to reconcile the sages with SS would be not only them helping Hylia forge the sword, but also the creation of the kilns of the sacred flames in a prophetic preparation for Link to imbue & grow the sword with sacred powers.

I feel like using “ancient sages” is just vague enough to still make sense. After all it never says that Hylia created the goddess sword by herself so, as you said, these ancient sages still could’ve been involved in its creation. Also just like real world myths, there’s always going to be different interpretations.

The “wisdom of the ancient sages” could refer to the Master Sword requiring blessings from sages to maintain its power, as seen in Wind Waker and kind of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom

It could be that Hylia created the Goddess Sword in the same way that an architect creates a house. She designed it, but others were involved in its actual construction.

I feel that Hylia imbued the Goddess Sword with her divine powers, and the “wisdom of the ancient sages” could be Fi. Of course, Twilight Princess didn’t even consider Fi in the Master Sword’s backstory, but considering Fi’s sage-like wisdom throughout Skyward Sword, it’s not hard to imagine their wisdom flows through Fi’s mind.

The sage medallion detail is actually wild. Maybe there were sages that helped her make the original Goddess Sword.

What an amazing little find!

What sucks and is crazy is that in TOTK, you get the Master sword but can't use it for 10 minutes after it times out. It is a permanent weapon but watered down as well. There's weapons you can make way more powerful so it's a huge moment and slap in the face because you really don't need it to face Ganon. Waste of time! Nintendo makes you go through all the trouble of going from shrine to shrine to mission to mission that if you missed earlier on in the game, you'll annoyingly have to go back and me sure you complete them just ti make sure you have over enough stamina to get it. It's ridiculous level of insanity.

Zelda herself is a sage in OoT and has the triforce of wisdom, thus she is the "wisdom" of the ancient sages.

I actually never knew about the Medallion thing there, that’s actually a super cool detail

Well hold on, who’s to say Skyward Sword Link didn’t eventually become a sage himself? The fact is we don’t know what SS Link and Zelda did after the events of SS. There could’ve been some huge events in between SS and Minish Cap that required Link to become one.

If we consider that the Master Sword had to be recreated in the Manga, I can clearly imagine something like this also be the case for the canon, that there was once a divine Sword was made by gods but not accessable for Mortals and that would be where the sages come in.

This might explain why Leviatas recognised the Sword on Link since it fully resembles its shape from when it was created before unknown times (I dunno if he recognised the shape or if he simply felt the Force)

Ive always personally headcannoned that the ancient sages helped hilya make the goddesses sword given the medallions in the sealed temple however after the era of skywards sword normal people would never know the goddesses sword existed they'd only know it as the master sword after link had upgraded it so the story of sages making the sword stayed the same but link is the one who truly completed the master sword

I hope one day we get a Movie in the time before The Legend of Zelda where everything was hightech (but fitting to the Zelda universe) and Hylia and Demise were also just normal People and Scientist who worked together.

It could be that they helped make the goddess sword, or perhaps it actually refers to the Master Swords current strength/state. Thanks to the Wind Waker we know that the sages prayers are important for keeping the Master Swords power to destroy evil, and Zelda blessed the Sword at the end of Skyward Sword which had a similar effect

Where did the flames come from? Maybe the sages had something to do with that

A Link to the Past also mentions the sages creating the Master Sword.

People are trying too hard to make every detail fit. SS goes out of its way to show that legends aren’t always passed down accurately. Fi states that Gaepora’s texts are missing critical sections thanks to humans passing them down, and on the surface, Gorko says he’s heard legends that Skyloft is made of gold with water that brings eternal life. This is done intentionally, to show that legends aren’t always factual. Even a guard in ALBW says he wonders if the paintings conveying the story of AlttP are fully accurate (they aren’t). It’s more likely TP Zelda is conveying information from a legend that isn’t accurate- rather than her being correct in a weird convoluted way, because there’s depictions of the Sage symbols on one ceiling in SS, so maybe the sages helped make the goddess sword which became the Master Sword. It’s too much of a stretch for a person in the age of TP to have knowledge about. The Great Deku Tree in BotW/TotK says the sword was made by a goddess. Being a deity, he likely has better and more accurate knowledge, hence he is closer to the truth.

It is possible that Hylia had the ancient sages of her era help in the creation of the Goddess Sword in preparation for the war against Demise.
Unrelated, but the sword Link wields in Echoes of Wisdom, it looks to be very similar to the Master Sword, but at a closer look, it appears to be a completely different weapon. I theorize that it is either the Noble Sword from the Zelda Oracle games, which can be upgraded to a “Master Sword” or the White Sword from Zelda 1, which looks very similar to the Master Sword in color.
