ITS SHEARING DAY!
So I am answering some of your most asked shearing questions...

Also, I've noticed a ewe who looks like perhaps she had some pink eye and is either temporarily blind, or permanently. So I've began treatment and hopefully she will recover.
In the lamb pen, I found a lamb that somehow broke her back leg, so I am casting the leg in hopes of a full recovery!

So what do we do with all this wool??
Comment below with some cool ideas we've never thought of before!!
#wool #sheep #pinkeye

For all who would like to see the actual footage of shearing, I have linked an unlisted video down below. Youtube just doesn't like me showing this, even though it is educational and a mandatory practice when raising wool sheep.

Unfortunate that YouTube doesn't like shearing day. Glad you go to the effort to still make the footage available for us that enjoys watching all aspects of your farming operation. Keep up the good work!

When there was an oil spill down in the gulf a few years ago, we sent all out fleece from our alpacas... It soaks up the oil.

If people don’t like to watch sheep getting sheared than they don’t need to watch the video I don’t know why you are the one who needs to change

I have a blind goat that has kidded three times. She’s an excellent mother.

Hi Sandi, if anyone criticises you for shearing please direct them to the YouTube video of the New Zealand sheep who had been living wild for a few years and they will soon see why sheep have to be sheared!

A lot of people dont understand that to have a profitable and healthy animal farm business, the farmers take care of their animals and try to prevent sickness and injuries as much as possible. Watching Sandi (and other Farmers on YT) i see the transparency and real live information they give us and sometimes forgett the hate they have to deal with probably every day.

The huge animal savety and freedom movement we had in the 90's brought quite few problems to light, but sadly also threw every other farmer, who takes care of their animals and treats them right, in with the "bad bunch". And those horror stories stuck in peoples heads and even now 20-30 years later still persist. Quite a few things changed since then, but people love to ignore that.
I had a friend who is a very outspooken and opinionated vegan. The amount of information she picked up from those animal liberation groups and PETA was just mind boggling. And no matter how much "discusion" or different information you showed her, there was no reasoning with her at all. Some people are just to blinded by their opinons to SEE.

I just want to thank you Sandi for showing us what you can (despite the YT police). And give you hope that maybe for every hater you encounter, you also might show someone who has no idea what is really going on, that farming and animal handling is not all dark, dreary barns, wet flors, bad feed, Flies, rats and stink all over and dead animals in the pens with the live ones.

It’s crazy that YouTube wouldn’t like the shearing. What’s wrong with a hair cut

English riding saddles use wool. The panels, which are the long “pillow” looking structures on the underside of the saddle, are traditionally filled with wool. They use different types of wool depending on the use of the saddle. Wool is used because it conforms to the shape of a horses back, doesn’t breakdown as quickly as some fibers and can be adjusted over time if it gets compressed or the horses back muscles change shape.

IF YOU DONT SHEAR THE SHEEP THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO GET FLY STRIKE AND THATS MORE PAINFULL THAN A COUPLE OF LITTLE NICKS AND MORE PAIN FULL FOR THE FARMER WHO LOVE THERE ANIMALS

Wool can be used as the fiber in natural material buildings like mudbrick homes. You mentioned in the video that you might use it in your garden, it works great for that a local farmer in my area sells it at the farmers market as cover for people's garden so I tried it and so far it has been great. However, I found that you have to wet the wool a bit so that it does not blow away the first day. I hope this makes some sense. My primary school did a lot of hands-on learning and part of that was learning how to knit/crochet/weave/sew and every year we would get some wool from a local sheep farmer and although it was a lot of work it was fun to learn about what work goes into making our clothes and not just seeing the final product. I wish more schools would do something like this.

Wool just needs to become "fashionable" again. There needs to be a large campaign advertising the benefits and renewable nature of wool. It fell out of fashion when synthetics came into the screen. Plus those who believe it's cruel ignore the fact that it plays a significant part in animal welfare.

Betty should be fine as long as it's not a genetic defect she should be ok- She lives in a safe, controlled environment, with free access to food and water so if she's a good Mom, she should be an asset to the flock

The US military uses wool socks and wool shirts because when it gets wet it still helps to hold body heat and blankets in the barracks.

SANDI you should use the wool to stuff little Billy, Ruby, Goat, and a plain white sheep plushies. Lol I don’t know if that would work but i sure as heck would buy them all.

I don’t ever plan to own a sheep farm. But I watch these videos just in case it ever happens.

You never know.
