Brilliant, inexpensive and easy diy, thank you Katherine! I’d like to share my lazy hack incase it helps anyone. The black chalk paint is great but I just use a black Sharpie or other permanent marker. It’s so much faster and easier plus you can find pretty much any colour needed. My other hack is if you want the finish to be matte, just apply a coat of matte topcoat nail polish…or glossy or whatever you want the finish to be. I always have sharpies and topcoat for my fingernails at home. They’re items I always keep on hand, so it’s kinda like a free solution. But I’ve never come across black chalk paint at my Dollar Tree

For the width of the towel, can space the brackets however far apart you need to hold a towel And the weight should be no problem because they are made to hold hanging plants . There may not be enough room between the dowel Rod and shelf for the thickness of the towel to slip through but you could put the wooden shelf ON TOP of the brackets and drill a few screw holes in the metal beforehand so you can screw into the bottom of the shelf with shirt screws to secure it down. That would give you more space between the dowel Rod and shelf for a towel to fit through.
