My question is methodology. Are the litter sizes quoted for live births? What is the three week survival rate for these litters? What is the average weight of the live birth piglets? My experience with many years with some of these breeds makes me question the order. Landrace is known for large litters in the15-16 piglet range. Hamps, Durocs and Chester Whites performed equally in pigs per litter in our farming operation. Some of these breeds are good mothers, but a horror for the farmers to work with because they are so protective of their litters. Yorkshire sows fall in that category. Chester Whites and Berkshires always seemed easy to handle when they had litters.

In small farm operations, it isn't just the litter size that is important. It is how many piglets survive to three weeks of age. Small piglets have a hard time competing for a nipple and die off pretty quickly. If you don't have small litters available to transplant the runts to, they are lost. Our breeding program was to breed for 10-11 live births looking for heavy at birth litter weights. Normally we would wean 10 of those 11 live pigs, trying to keep litter losses to one pig per litter.
