I'd like to talk to you about a very important topic. That is the connection between hip fractures and death.

Consider this: people who are 50 and over have a 1 in 3 chance of dying within the year after a hip fracture. That's a scary statistic. Why does this happen? There's the trauma of the fracture, the pain of the fracture, the anesthesia, the surgery and all of this can be a particularly large stress for people with pre-existing conditions. There are many more risks related to hip fractures with or without surgery. Watch the video to find out more.

My grandma died from a hip fracture. She was 83. Had diabetes. Doctors said surgery would be too risky. Her heart would be heavily impacted. They tried to keep her as comfortable as possible. She later went into hospice care. She passed. Everyday i miss her.

I am 50 years old and broke my hip at 44 due to a fall from a bike. I had surgery the following day. Since then, I stopped participating in sports, which led to developing diabetes and nerve pain. This experience has changed my life completely.

I'm 45 years old. My daughter and I were riding scooters together. My scooter hit gravel, and i flew off and broke my hip. Luckily, im younger than most who experience this fracture. Im at 4.5 weeks post surgery, and still 50% weight bearing. The pins in my hip have slightly started to come out. Overall, i am very happy with my recovery. Im pain-free when ambulating. I would say your best bet for a good outcome is to be in decent shape before your injury. Good luck to all those in recovery.

Wow! I had no idea how dangerous hip fractures can be. In fact, I thought the hip replacement surgery success stories I frequently hear about (especially at my age) were reason to worry less about potential hip problems. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge regarding this potentially dangerous problem and suggesting some ways we can minimize its devastating potential in our lives.🙏

I found this very discouraging. I have stress fractures in my hip that caused Edema in the Bone Marrow that caused a fractured left hip. It's been 14 months now and the Doctors say it will take 8-9 months to get in for a hip replacement. Am 66 years old but I feel Great. Am on Keto/Vore and don't take pain pills. I am Trusting in my Lord Jesus Christ for total and Complete Healing!

Oh man #>%* that Stat. Putting this out to let ya all know you can do it, you gotta lose weight immediately step one 1 I would only eat once a day. Then drink a shit ton of water and constantly move even if your confined to your rack. Stay positive learn to accept the pain and never quit. This is a fact the less you move the more you hurt. Do exactly what your therapist tells you and then do it all day everyday.. it's a constant struggle that will ease. Tomorrow will be 4 years since the accident 1/26/19. At 52 years old I feel 25 feet alone in the woods. Shattered hip shattered pelvis broke right shoulder broke 10 ribs permanently bruised femer severe hypothermia bruised lungs. 60 second walk took hours of crawling and flipping my bad leg over the downed trees I came upon. I then made it too my truck climbed in it and called for my medivac. Spent week in trauma unit couple weeks in rehab hospital weeks in wheelchair weeks with walker and cane. After 7 months I burned my handicapp sticker that would've expired tomorrow. I can't say this enough when I didn't move the pain and suffering was horrible. First 2 years after accident I rarely slept due to pain levels. Also about 90 days after the fall I quit all prescribed pills . Used medical Marijuana for pain and sleep issues zero side effects. I could go on forever. Been very brutual, but if I can, anyone can. I do therapy everyday still also challenging myself as gains are made. My goal this summer is a 45 minute 5 k gonna be tough, but I will. Also do lots of stretching and walking you'll get better. My gains early in my recovery were beyond slow. I remember a day when I thought I'd never put my sock on again without help. Gotta have faith and and take it one day at a time. Never give ask yourself what is the other option. Take care never give 💯. Remember like I was thinking the day I thought I was dying there's always hope and light at the end of the tunnel. The X ray tech told me over the years she's done thousands of hip and pelvis x-rays and only seen one worst than mine. Shout out to my rescuers and medical teams that helped in my journey and to my surgeon he's the real deal, putting me back together. They called me humpty dumpy, lmao. Well hopefully I've motivated someone to make a full recovery that's all I am trying to do is give someone hope.

A lot of deaths after hip fractures in men are due to the routine use of catheters after surgery. The catheters allow the person to get a UTI which rapidly progresses into sepsis. This is preventable because some hospitals and rehab hospitals are much worse statistically than others. The routine use of the catheter serves little purpose other than to make it easier on the hospital staff.

I am 94. Broke my hip and leg 6 months ago. I walk each day and use the treadmill at the gym at walking pace. I would like to strengthen my leg as I am impatient to get back to normal. I will use the ones you recommend in the articles. I also use the bike in the gym and another type of bike.I try to go twice a week. Just wish I didn’t get so tired…I don’t understand people saying that this kind of fall is fatal. I have every intention of getting back to normal. Just find it slow.

Crikey mate! I'm a 71 year old male. I dumped my bicycle 8 weeks ago and now have a hip fracture and a head of humerus fracture. I'm also a heart attack survivor from 8 years ago. According to this video I have a 2 in 3 chance of dying this year. Not buying it mate, unless it's from jealous husband.

This is so true. My mother was 76, suffered a hip fracture, and within three months, developed an infection in the metal pin implanted in her hip fracture repair, which spread to her bloodstream and travelled to her heart, leading to sepsis and her death. 😭😭😭

I fell and suffered an impact hip fracture. The orthopedic doctor I saw said that due to my osteoporosis (which I did not know I had), age (I'm 70), and the fact that I smoked my whole life, he could not recommend surgery. He did not answer my only question which was is it a complete or partial break. He never answered the question, lectured me on smoking (I quit some time ago), and could not get me out the door fast enough. So here I sit. Trying to heal. No doctor, therapy, or treatment plan. Hope I don't die!

I broke my hip partially in a mountain bike accident. Thought it was just bruised. A week and half later slipped in some water at the pool after my swim heard a crack and fell to the ground. I had a grade 4 fracture of the femorall neck now have total hip replacement. I'm 62. Was training for a triathlon, which is out of my future. It's been just over six weeks, and I'm in a heck of a lot of pain . Nearly as much as the partial break. Doc says everything looks ok incision site was pretty well healed at 3 weeks. No visible bruising swelling was gone at 3 weeks. I'm just over 6 weeks post surgery. I've been told to stay off bike untill the 3 months mark. I sure miss the aerobic exercise. Walking 5 + miles a day at 17 minute mile. Before accident was doing 12:15 minute walking mile.
