Do You Need to Update Your Computer BIOS?

Its a age old question: Why you should flash your BIOS and Why Shouldn't flash your BIOS? I would say there is a case for both of these questions.

So I will break it down as easy as I can. If your computer is working perfectly fine and all your hardware devices are working fine and your new to computers, then leave it well alone. On the other hand , if you are having issues with hardware or features in the BIOS not working as they should, or instability issues and the computer is not working as it should, then look for a BIOS update. So whats does a BIOS update do? they fix bugs and known issues with the older BIOS version. They can also boost performance and stability. It also fixes a known security flaw if there is one for that motherboard. Whats the risk? if you turn off or have a power cut or computer crashes during the BIOS update, then you run the risk of bricking your motherboard. (Which means dead motherboard)

At the end of the day, the choice is yours.

I used to update my bios regularly. Then I had a stroke, and it's taken me a while (a few years), to get back into computers. But my machine now is quite old and I find that there is no bios update. Thanks so much for these videos they are helping me get my skills back.

I want to flash my bios for my new motherboard I bought week ago, but my knowledge has not yet reached thus far. I am very interested to learn more about computer through this channel ( especially maintenance both software and hardware from A_Z). I always monitor this channel for new video. Thank you so much for your contributions. I haven't seen any channel on YouTube that provides fruitful information about computer equal to this channel ( in my personal opinion). I am learning a lots from you. Sorry for the long comment which you might not have time to read all.

I do flash bios for the added security purpose and performance. But if your not sure always watch a Britec 09 or Carey Holzman video. These guys know what they are talking about. You will learn more from them than mist all the other channels combined!!

Only if you are having issues or need newer cpu support. There is a always a risk in it.

I always make sure I have the latest BIOS installed. Also due to security fixes, but especially for the newer or updated functionalities

Always, though with some cautions - such as an old LGA1155 board that had an update to UEFI, but the last non-UEFI was reckoned to be better.
As a rule, avoid Beta BIOS versions unless the added features are ESSENTIAL.
Use a UPS preferably, and don't flash if there are thunderstorms in the area, as that could trip the power

yes every time if its compatible with my hardware IE they have not removed my cpu from it :) always check the discretion on the update to make sure

I always flash the bios to the latest version. Ryzen 5 3600, msi b450 motherboard. This motherboards bios can be flashed with a special flashbutton on the back with a usb stick. This way it can be flashed without cpu in it.

Yes, I do flash my BIOS. Usually only once; when using a MB that's been around for a while, one can flash the BIOS to the most recent one. I've never seen more BIOS updating after flashing the most recent one with older boards.

I've learned to not flash the BIOS unless absolutely necessary. As a PC tech years ago I received a Dell AIO for repair. I reloaded windows and as I reinstalled drivers I updated the BIOS driver and after the process finished, and the computer tried to reboot, the machine was bricked. Luckily Dell recognized they had put the wrong driver on their driver website and replaced the motherboard but that could have turned out very badly. Anytime the firmware updates on one of my machines now I'm holding my breath.

Awesome guide britec!
There's also another alternative:
From windows, go to device manager, locate firmware and expand, then click on what ever it's in there and check for updates. Afterwards you will get directly in ez flash with the bios files loaded :D

Update the BIOS if you have newer ram or a newer CPU that isn't recognized. Other than that, if everything is running smoothly then don't bother with a BIOS update.

Yes, I also have a battery backup system for the PC. Sometimes I use the ASUS EZ Flash and sometimes I just place the new BIOS image on a USB stick and flash it from that.

Flashing the system firmware requires a careful execution of the recommended steps.
Updated to newer version ensures enhanced system features and fixes.

When it comes to the bios in routers YES it's typical about added or updated security or handling of IPv6 - on mature PC systems NO - don't fix things that ain't broken 🤔🙂
