When the woman says that the name of the baby will be "Dylan", in honor ot Theo's son, he smiles and dies in peace. His mission was done.

Zizek pointed out when he visits his brother that a society without a future has no need for a history. So we see this lonely guy collecting art for no reason seemingly. When she names her son after Theo's son, she gives meaning to his history. Hope gives history it's meaning.

Personally, I think that it doesn't really matter if "The Human Project" turned out to be a good or bad entity. Sure, for the characters that matters a HELL of a lot, but the credits reveal children laughing, hinting that children were finally born again regardless. It's a scary and weird world we've created as humans. A lot of really good people and a lot of really bad people. In the end, humanity got what it needed. If that was done in a moral way or an evil way or something in between, it's not really the most important aspect of the film's unseen epilogue. Thankfully, sadly, or inevitably, the human world won and now has to figure out where to go from there. Much like the World Wars or 9/11 or Covid or any unfortunate world-changing event, we move on in our own ways.

my mothers 3rd child died age 3. She had 5 kids but the loss of that child was one of the few constant sources of sorrow in her life. She passed, but when I had my own daughter, she was named Rachel for my sister, and the source of my mother's loss and sorrow. Seeing her grow happy and healthy unlike the first Rachel, this scene always hits me deep, not just the continuation of life and teaching of how to parent, but the names that live long beyond those who gave them to us.

Everything is a mystical, cosmic battle between faith and chance.
It was by chance Theo reunited with Julian, and by proxy meet Kee. And with that a test of faith. But chance comes and does what chance does, it f*cks everything and everyone over. But Theo never wavers, he fights for the one he didn’t think there was anymore. A future. And so, at the end, his faith is rewarded. “I’ll call my baby ‘Dylan’. It’s a girl’s name, too.”

Even if Theo really did die in the end, at least he did knowing that he saved Dylan. Very noble from Kee for the name choice.

This movie has a very brilliant Christian sub context with Jasper not only as a John the Baptist figure ushering this baby from a beautifully shown and experienced dystopia to a ship just off screen that the director makes a brilliant choice is not revealing it to the audience. But especially the ending science is particularly should be of interest to religious audiences, because it strikes so much resemblances to Jesus’s apostles in a boat and scarred among the choppy waters. And the ship as metaphor as Jesus and in his belief you will be kept safe and shown to gentle waters.

Did the movie have a bit more of a positive and hopeful ending than the book? Very much yes. Was it earned given how emotionally exhausted you are at the end? Also yes.
