Understanding Acceleration Response Spectrum of 2023 Turkey Earthquake and Building Stability

The acceleration response spectrum is used for building design in areas affected by earthquake. It is related to the natural (fundamental) period of building and thus, it can provide information on what acceleration (or velocity or displacement) each building would be subjected to during a design earthquake. This video explains how to read and interpret an acceleration response spectrum from the 2023 Turkey earthquake and how to estimate the natural period of different types of building.
To obtain an acceleration response spectrum, the following procedure is used: 1) choose the mass of a linear single degree of freedom (SDOF) system and a value of the damping ratio; 2) select a value of stiffness (k) and excite the system with the selected earthquake motion; 3) record the highest value of acceleration of the output motion of the SDOF; 4) plot this maximum value against the natural period (T); choose a different value of k and repeat the process.
