Steely Dan - Dirty Work

Track 2 (side one) from the album, "Can't Buy a Thrill" (1972).

Times are hard
You're afraid to pay the fee
So you find yourself somebody
Who can do the job for free

When you need a bit of lovin'
'Cause your man is out of town
That's the time you get me runnin'
And you know I'll be around

I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah

Light the candle
Put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early
Like a thousand times before

Like the castle in its corner
In a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble
And I stay here just the same

I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah

I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah

I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work, oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more

Tony Soprano singing this is one of the best things I've ever seen.

It doesn’t matter what brought you here. I’m just glad you’re here.

Let's not forget David Palmer's vocals. Short-lived in the band, long-remembered for giving the early songs their resonance. Reminds me a bit of Todd Rundgren

These songs from 70-80s wont ever be matched by computerized crap today. Real talent by humans not computers.

I'm ashamed to say that at the age of nearly exactly 45 I have just discovered steely Dan. Love it ❤

this song still has an atmosphere that is so comfortable to listen to even though the lyric is tragic

I lost my sister, and best friend in the world, almost 2 years ago. We saw the Dan at Mohegan Sun together, 3 yrs ago. One of the best nights of my life. We sang every song, and knew every word. Before we knew it, at least 25 people joined us. Singing like crazy. It was so very awesome.

I'm 68, it's early, going over the late 70's in my mind. What better way to do it than with Becker and Fagan

slo mo shot, American Hustle. I mean, I've heard this song since I was a kid in the 70's, but it was used perfectly, magically, in American Hustle.

This Song never had the makings of a Varsity Athlete.

Brings me back, to a child hearing this at my dad's parties, rainy nights, loud singing, back on the farm.
