Does your shoulder hurt during back exercises? Are your back muscle #gainz not as awesome as you would like them to be? Learning how to scoop the blade and apply that to your pulling movements is excellent for building stability and strength in the shoulders and back. As @MoveUMike mentions, we have done a ton of videos on this scooping motion… we usually do 1 video per week on it. Many of our fans are starting to grasp this concept!
When people have shoulder issues, the first thing we like to check is how well their shoulder blade moves up and down, forward and back, rotating up and down, and rotating forward and back(scoop). In every case of shoulder issues, one of these motions is limited. It’s simple: improve your shoulder blade range of motion, control, and awareness and your shoulder/neck/back pain will likely reduce. Is it easy? Hell no. It takes time and a LOT of practice to be able to control your shoulder blade in more complex exercises like pullups and pushups. Keep working on it!
The shoulder blade must move when the arm moves. If it doesn’t, then the arm will have limited range of motion and will bump into objects in the shoulder (acromion bone for one) and may cause the impingement symptoms that you feel on the front/side of the shoulder. To correct the impingement issue long-term, focus on getting control of your blade!
For those of you struggling to build back muscles, making sure that your blade can scoop will make the back nice and evenly defined when doing your strengthening exercises.
