Why We Only Learn When We Repeat

Our education system is based on the idea that we can learn things once, and that they’ll then stay in our minds throughout our lives. That’s far too optimistic. Our brains are like sieves. If anything is going to remain in them, we need regular reminders of what really matters. Fascinatingly, religions always understood that.

It's not so much learning through repitition, because even with repitition you still tend to forget. You mostly learn through reflection and application, when you reflect and understand the purpose of what you are learning and the value thereof, that's when knowledge is stored and well, applying it.

I think this video might be my favorite across all amazing videos from this channel. As a language learner, I have been listening a lot of tips and lessons from polyglots, and the key of their success is, likely, repetition. Establishing habits around the things you wanna keep in mind, learning new things and revisiting previous concepts is the "secret" of lifelong (and maintained) learning. Not just for languages, but for anything, I guess.

There seems no substitute for repetition, and a true anti-ageing practice (as the myelin dies off in the brain, and is especially attacked by illnesses such as Parkinson's and Dementia) would be to learn something new and complex in the 2nd half of your life; the violin, perhaps. Or Japanese, or carpentry.

the reason why we study so much with comparatively little repetition in school is because we have accumulated so much knowledge. Everyone has their own path to take in the field of their choosing. Schools have many functions, but one of their main functions in higher school education is to prepare you for university and what you will learn there. As you can expect everyone to study something different, you want your students to have at least heard the most important concepts of every field so they have an easier time in university. The matter of fact is that a mathematician has no need whatsoever for interpretation of poetry and a translator does not need to know how to solve integrals. Learning is beautiful; but just continuing to study without having a proper job at the end of it can cause lots of suffering, so people should better focus on getting good in only 1 area of expertise and focus practice of repetition on that 1 field.
