═════════════════════ 10 Fun Facts About Overwatch ═══════════════════════
1. Overwatch is Blizzard's fourth major franchise, and came about following the 2014 cancellation of the ambitious MMORPG Titan. A portion of the Titan team came up with the concept of Overwatch, based on the success of team-based first-person shooters like Team Fortress 2 and the growing popularity of MOBAS, creating a hero-based shooter that emphasized teamwork. Some elements of Overwatch borrow assets and concepts from the canceled Titan project.
2. Initial development of the game began with creating the first Hero character, Tracer, who was based on a character from Titan with similar time-manipulation abilities. They used Tracer and a single map based on the Temple of Anubis, to test how well the core mechanics played.
3. Every character in Overwatch has their own individual sound effect for their footsteps. So it is possible for an avid fan and MLG gamer to know what character is about to come around the corner. Well except for Zenyatta, he hovers silently of course...
4. One of the main complaints that Blizzard had about their failed MMO, Titan, was that it simply wasn't fun to play. Therefore, the mantra for Overwatch was prioritize fun gameplay. One of the impacts of this decision is the game's lack of ammunition. Who wants to run around and pick up ammo for their characters? Seeing as Blizzard found this boring and Overwatch was not created for realism they just thought why not give players an unlimited supply of ammunition.
5. In the alpha, Bastion had a different Ultimate. He actually threw out a little sentry bot which could drive around the map like an RC car and be activated by the player within a certain time frame. Once activated it would unleash a barrage of bullets all around it. Ultimately, Blizzard didn't think it fit his playstyle, so instead went with his tank mode that we all know so well.
6. Hanzo and Genji were once the same character during production. Blizzard initially created Hanzo, but ended up giving him far too many ninja abilities than they would have liked, so they decided to split him into two character rather than cram so much into one. The second charecter eventually became Genji, brother of Hanzo.
7. Zarya sometimes says, "Credit to team" which is a line used by the Heavy character in Team Fortress 2. Which I believe is Blizzard paying homage to the creators of this type of FPS genre Team Fortress 2.
8. Zarya is based off a Blizzard employee named Tamara, who's actually from Russia! She's a character designer and you can definitely see the similarities between her and Zarya. I can't even fathom how awesome it would be to have a character in Overwatch created in your resemblance.
9. Lucio, the Brazilian DJ and arguably the most OP character in the game, was originally revealed at Gamescom 2015 in Germany. However, the reveal began with Blizzard releasing two techno tracks from one of his albums. You can download these two songs from the official Overwatch soundcloud account and they're actually played by Lucio in-game.
10. Blizzard initially had a problem with getting the name Overwatch for this FPS. They couldn't trademark it because another company had already developed an app with that name, which brought gaming-like elements to real-life paintball matches. After a few legal woes, Blizzard eventually secured the rights to the name Overwatch and were able to keep it for their brand new game. Wonder how much that other company was paid...
