You should try "Go". Pieces don't even move and there is just one kind of piece. Yet it is incredible complex even more so than Chess.

I wouldnt use the word "better", but you've listed all the reasons I play Go. No shade to chess, it's a great game, but Go scratches a lot of the same itches that you mentioned

Minecraft. All that you said is true for minecraft too( can be played for any time, can be played with friends, family). Just cannot be played physically. It is so fucking complex. Redstone makes you feel intelligent. And the best thing? You can play chess in minecraft... just make a redstone machine(not that I know how to). It can NEVER go by luck if the conditions are good (internet, and pc).

Go is beyond ancient, incredibly complex and deeply tactical. "Better" isn't the word i would use but certainly easily comparable to chess.

Agree with others about GO. Would be cool if popular chess streamers gave it a whirl to bring new people in. Even with all the modern board and war games not many have the long term hobby appeal of chess or go.

Go is cool and very complex but often boring.

Chess is funnish and can be tactical but gets repetitive and feels boring at times.

Dutch Blits is a very cool game is action packed and doesn't get to stale bc the cards are always different.

Checkers feels very nostalgic and is fun but gets very boring after you play alot.

Monopoly in my opinion is so goated, it has versatility, fun, strategy, action, tactics, negotiation, money handeling, nostalgia and more.

Risk is very cool, very strategic, fun with the right people, feels very rewarding when you win, physically and mentally exhausting, and very challenging, like Chess and Checkers and Go, Risk if you make one wrong mistake, one wrong push can easily ruin your chance of winning completely.

Poker, is pretty fun, requires knowledge to play well, has variety of games as well, is action packed with high stakes, uses and almost requires mental strength and knowledge on how to trick your opponents.

And in dire situations even slight emotion can give away your position in the game.

Tic Tac Toe is fun even if there isn't much to it, it's just fun for some reason 😆

Plants Vs Zombies doesn't need a description.

Board games are so underrated man.

I’ve been getting into Go. It has all of the traits you describe, and some even deeper. I still prefer chess, but the same description could be used for Go!

The game of Go/Baduk/Weiqi is much, much older, and the only strategy game I think is definitely better (to me) and deeper than chess.

Is say a lot of video games have past chess when it comes to complexity and pure adrenaline rush. The main thing chess has going for it I believe is it feels so personal. Whether you win or lose it’s usually a gritty match to the very end, unless skill level is much much higher
