I'm Ghanaian, and I remember being punished in grade 6 for not being able to mention West African countries and their capital cities. I think the problem in America is that they don't encourage themselves to learn of other countries and cultures.

In Ghana, having knowledge of many countries around the world is seen as very intelligent and respectable.

Back in primary school, my brother and I had a huge world map pasted on our bedroom wall just beside our bed. And I remember reading the list of countries and their locations everyday in an attempt to know all the over 180 countries worldwide.
One time, my uncle promised me a gift if I could point to a country he would mention on the map the moment he mentions it without have to search for it. And I think I got about 80% of it right, and I was 12 by then.

German boie here: I knew someone who went to the US for a semester as an exchange student and the family she landed at gave her a house tour explaining all the american high-tech to her us european cave people have never heard of, like what a fridge is... Or a toaster... Yup. A few years later I met a brazilian who told me she had friends who experienced the exact same thing.

Regarding your point on passports, I would like to point out that it is a lot easier to travel to other countries if you live in Europe rather than America. Traveling anywhere other than Canada and Mexico is extremely costly and frankly not worth it for most people. There’s no need for a passport if you don’t have the time or money needed for such a journey.
