Valve Index Vs Oculus Rift S

With the upcoming game Half Life Alyx only being in VR, two headsets come to mind for me when looking at the field mainly being the Valve Index and Oculus Rift S. Between the huge price differences which one is the better buy?

I suppose a lot of people don't compare horses with courses when we talk resolution. The Oculus Rift S has 2560 x 1440 pixels, 110 degrees of view, 3, 689, 400 pixels the valve Index has 2880 x 1600 x130 degrees of view.
4, 608, 000 pixels

If we look at the differences in view area it is about 18.19% .

Taking that area off the Valve Index to compare density of pixels between the 2 head sets we see that the Index over the same area as the Rift S has 3, 769, 804 pixels and the rift has 3, 686, 400 which over the view area of the Rift S, the Index has 83, 404 more pixels or 2.2% better resolution.

Sure the Index has better View Area. Higher refresh rate, Better sound but the improvement in actual resolution is marginal and I think the math's shows that. For those who want a sharp picture like Flight simmers etc both are comparable. (except in price). Those of us who look at the difference in resolution and get the Index expecting it to be head and shoulders above the Rift S in sharpness and actual real world resolution may be disappointed.

S is cheaper, has less cables and works with oculus and steam games no problem.

Btw. What is the focal length for S and index? Ive seen info that S is below 1 meter so it would be crisp even for short sighted people

Or for those that in Australia, go get Rift S because Valve never offer a chance to buy Index here, come on, it's 2020...

Oculus has more games because it has its own games in oculus home and it can play all steam vr games

The four horsemen of "I'm going to return my Rift S"

*No DisplayPort connection*
*USB connection not working*
*We couldn't detect your headset...*
*Rift S*
*not connected*

found your talk about games silly as you can play oculus games on steam vr (using revive) and steam vr games on oculus

Here's my takeaway from this... After having Gen1 VR forever, both the Vive and Oculus in my case, the Rift S with the simple set up and no sensors is super nice, considering you won't have a bird nest of wires to deal with... The only reason I would get the Index is for the controllers tbh, but a grand is pretty steep for the whole package, although if you own a Vive, you can just buy the index controllers alone, or you can buy the index headset by itself for $500. I say they should've priced it at $700 for the whole package.

Returned my valve index this week. I would have it working one week, then a few weeks later when i wanted to play again it would stop working. Spend 12 hours to finally to get it to work for one play session then it would stop. Finally when hl alyx came out, i could not get it too work at all. Got a replacement and that did not work either lol. Might try again in the future, but for now i would pass. When it did work though, it was an amazing experience, boneworks with those controllers was dam amazing.

Sure hope the Index 2 comes out. And I hope it has at least 160° FOV.

FOV is what's required for full immersion for me.

Honestly, the setup and space needed for the valve index is a deal breaker for me. Being able to plug in and play is a huge point, rather than having to plug everything in - or have an entire space dedicated to it.

The very first rift is now $80, but only comes with the headset, 1 sensor (you need two if you want to use the touch controllers) and the little remote.

also there's another way to test if your pc is ready for valve index by searching "Are You Ready for Valve Index" it is a steam-PC tester and should help if you don't know much about your pc also there is a test for oculus rift s by searching up "test PC for oculus rift s" that's what I use.

Just wondering, I've heard there is almost no screen dooring on the index. Is there any screen dooring on the rift s? I tried the quest, and its pretty noticeable

What about the screen door effect?
For 1300 bucks (Cad) i would expect crystal clear picture, Otherwise ill stick with my rift.

I own a HTC Vive but looking at purchasing one of these headsets in your review. This is exactly what I wanted to see. Research is the Key and this is very helpful to me. Now to decide how much I want to spend. The Valves resolution has my interest but the Price of the Rift S and the ease of use is great. So hard to decide. Anyway, Thank you very much 😎🥽🖐

So I have an Oculus Rift S. AND I HATE IT because of the endless software issues and the awful customer support. Should I sell it on Ebay and get a valve index instead? I have an RTX 2060 / Core i7-8750H Laptop. Which will hopefully be able to take full advantage of the Index's capabilities. I'm at the point where I couldn't care less about the Facebook ecosystems exclusive games and the "value" you get from the Rift S I just want to use VR without the all damn frustration.
