5 Reasons a DSG is BETTER than a Manual Transmission!

Considering a DSG transmission? In this video I give you 5 reasons why a dual clutch transmission is better than a standard! DSG vs Standard / Manual transmission!

Volkswagen AG's DSGs (Direct Shift Gearbox) could be found in the MK5, MK6, and MK7 Golf, GTI, Jetta, Golf R, TDI, Polo, Passat, R32, Beetle, Tiguan, Touran, CC, Scirocco, A1, A3, A4, S4, S5, A7, Q3, Q5, R8, Skoda, and even the Bugatti Veyron.

Pick a DSG over a manual because:
1) Faster 0-60 / Straight line acceleration
2) Better track times / easier near the limit
3) Easier to use in traffic / no risk of stalling
4) Can generally handle more power than a standard's clutch, at least for MK6 GTI's
5) Paddle Shifters

I'm not saying a DSG is better than a manual, as I love my Rabbit and Miata's manual transmissions, but these are some nice benefits!

Bought a MK6 with DSG six months ago. I am one who doesn't want to use a clutch pedal and shifter. I drive mine in manual mode 99% of the time and paddle shift - absolutely love it! Different strokes for different folks! Glad the GTI has both choices.

SICK! I think I would consider DSG since I was never a car guy or that one who mods the cars since high school nor do I know how to drive stick yet... what's making me want to stay in an automatic transmission is the traffic in LA. I'd rather focus swerving thru lanes and cutting traffic than having to worry about changing gears as well.. Awesome review!

Yep, I was a diehard manual driver and just got an Elantra N with a DSG. There are times I miss the third pedal but overall I'm thoroughly impressed with the DSG. I drive it in manual mode 95% of the time as well, when I first got the car I left it in auto mode a lot and was regretting my decision. Driving in manual mode is great, and the EN won't auto upshift either which is very nice

I like manual transmission. One of the reasons, its not expensive to maintain. For many people including me clutch replacement is a DIY job. While the replacement of the DSG - mechatronics unit is about $$$$.

I've beaten things I shouldn't have beaten with my Eurodyne Stage 2 Mk7 GTI, because of the tuned DSG. A DSG doesn't miss gears. Kind of embarrassing when a Corvette tries to pull on you and you see the occupants nearly slam their faces into the dash, when the driver misses a shift.

I test drove both GTIs. DSG is great but the stick just feels right and the clutch is butter smooth. It was very zippy and sure footed.

The only thing that makes a manual transmission better than a DSG, besides longevity, is the fact that you can start in 2nd or 3rd gear in snowy/slippery conditions, which you can't do in a DSG/DCT.

I had a 08 VW golf plus with dsg, I absolutely never had an automatic before this, I kept the car over 6yrs, I really loved it, smooth big bird, she was black, 1.9tdi bulletproof engine, returned minimum 55+all-day, great car real smooth

I have heard that the current generation of DSGs are very good. I think they used to be good on motorways and country roads, but too jerky and unresponsive for stop/start town/city driving - but I think that’s changed now. I have heard that keeping it in “automatic mode” is pretty decent, and I can see that being used a lot for town/city driving. I have heard that one of the problems still with a DSG is that reverse parking can be jerky - is that true?

The other thing I don't like about DSGs is the auto up shift.

not much driver control in cars these days. cars steer for you, brake for you and other things that degrade the driving experience. even with the manual you can't left foot brake. WTF!

I've already owned a DSG GTI, and I'm currently in the market for another GTI, I really don't think I'll be getting another DSG, i just felt that the drive really lacked involvement and any real excitement.

The standard maual transmission is surpreme is... if you drive more than two miles a day… I drive 100 000 km a year. My experience is : Coventional Automatic get costly problems after 2-3 years… DSG is in the same situation. A standard manual transmission outlast both by far.... AND... even if a DSG is in basic a manual controlled by The Electronic do not consider the terrain Ahead...or pedestrians or whatever

Rsult is that With a manual transmission I will have at least 5-10 % less fuel used. THAT should say someting about effeciency

Just get a tune with a no lift shift feature problem solved. Traffic doesn't bother me driving a manual.

DSG: Doesn't slam gears. To some that is no fun

I worked at a Vw dealership and it piss me off to see polo and golf gtis without manual transmission, I get it a DSG is great but I prefer standard for the feel

I'm wondering about DSG reliability due to being over-engineered. If I understand it correctly there is an Mechatronic unit and a multiple clutch that work together.

Seems a manual is just more of a simple less complicated design without the electronic component.

DSG has the benefit now with launch control to allow the automatic transmission GTI and Golf R to go.5 to .7 seconds quicker over their manual counterpart in the 0 to 60 time

I am driving a DSG since almost 3 years and miss the manual transmission. Just more fun to drive. Its not always about speed.
