*What shaft are you using currently? Will it change after this!?*

I’m a 78 year old with a swing speed of 83 mph. I replaced my Callaway Rouge STMax CYPHER 40g driver with Callaway’s AI Smoke Max Fast. It also is a 40g but the club feels lighter and “feels” better. I also went from 10.5* to 12* loft . Ball now launches higher with a slight draw and I’m hitting more fairways! Many things such as kick point and the dynamic loft in addition shaft weight must be considered. Great video!

As a professional fitter, I see thousands of golf swings and match shafts and heads to optimize golfers' performance. While you can use clubhead speed to determine a starting point for shafts, it's a bit short sighted to use that exclusively. There are several other factors to consider.

I am 75 years old with a swing speed of mid 70's. After extensive testing the shaft that gives me the better distance and ball flight is stiff rated. The problem we all have is there is no standard measurement calibration between manufacturers. So a stiff shaft from one could be either Regular or Extra stiff from another make. Testing is the only way to find what is right for you.

I consistently drive the ball to the right, at times just plane slice to the next county. My driver is flex shaft. A friend of mine gave me her dad's fairway woods and I recently started to use them and and my shots are going straighter. I noticed the shafts were regular stiff and they now have become my favorite clubs on the fairway. I'm going to test out stiff shafted drivers and see if if I get the same results.

So glad you covered this. I always wondered what is correct

I enjoyed this video. So relatable, Ijust got a driver fitting and was fitted to a regular flex. This was a total surprise, since I have been playing stiff and extra stiff for the past 20 years. I’m 58 years old and have to realize I might need a softer shaft. My typical loss has been off to the right with the same loft driver and a regular flex all of a sudden I’m hitting a bullet straight, I love your video. Keep it up. I look forward to the next one.

I’m 50, my driver swing speed is around 105 mph, I can maybe squeeze out 110mph but then I’m in “spray it off the planet territory” and anything can happen. Fitters always default to giving me a stiff shaft, and sometimes extra stiff, but I always pick firm-ish regular flex, and that’s because I like the feel of regular around 60 grams. It does spin more but only a few hundred revs maybe I’m losing 5 or 10 yards, but it certainly doesn’t impact distribution for me, perhaps that would have been an issue years ago but quality has probably improved significantly since then. I think how something feels to the user and what their preferences are can override much of the conventional knowledge around who should use what. I still carry the ball 260-270 and roll out to 280-290 on average with the odd ball threatening 300 if I pure it and the conditions are right. I hit it harder on the range when there’s no penalty, sometimes when swinging the driver on the course I’m really holding back and I may only be swinging at 95 or 100 mph. I’m happy with regular flex that I know will work when swinging on course rather than something I have to swing my best for it to work for me.
PS David Byrne wants his jacket back 😂😏😉 (this dates me, I’m an old git, sorry!)
PPS I use regular in all my hybrid and fairways too, but use stiff steel in my irons

I bought a new Cobra LTDX a couple years ago. Got fitted for a stiff shaft. The fitter said I was in between a stiff and x stiff. Since I am 69 years old, not getting any younger, I went for the stiff shaft. However, I also bought a senior flex, a regular flex, and x stiff flex shafts since it's very easy to switch them out. I spent about an hour and thirty mins. indoors and out. I gathered all the data from the launch monitor and found very little difference between each shaft. The best feeling shaft for me was the senior flex shaft. So that's the one I use most often. It feels like I can swing with less effort and get the same results as all the other shafts. It feels better, so I like it better... By the way, on the course I'm swinging the driver about 99-103 mph. To me the perceived effort is about 75%. With the more flexible senior shaft, I feel like I can let the shaft do the work instead of me.

I was custom fit into an sr flex driver and wood shafts last year, and have been massively struggling with hooks as a result. I have to really slow my swing down to try and control it. I'm just waiting on the new Titleist drivers and woods to release so I can get fitted better at a new place as I don't have confidence in returning to the place that I believe incorrectly fitted me. This video confirms what I had expected that I was fit into the wrong shafts.

I was fit into a stiff flex Diamana shaft for my PXG driver, I had a regular flex from an off the shelf set and snapped the shaft on the driver. It still feels very whippy and I struggle with it.

I think that Gram Weight is a big factor as well. Ping has Stuff, Regular, & Senior Regular. Not Senior at say 55 Grams. Very difficult to select online with used clubs. Fitting is the only answer.

I learned this fishing. Depending on the stiffness of the rod dictated the speed/force you use to cast. Go to fast and the cast was poor same with too slow. Match the cast to the rod and just right. Then there is fly My second set of clubs was regular flex. I wanted a 2 iron and had borrowed one and hit it well but the shop only had one in stiff. Never could hit that damn thing.

I am 86 I have a tailor-made R 11 head senior shaft and I extended it to 50 inches I know it’s illegal but I need to get the distance so I can enjoy my game I can just about reach 200 yards so that works for me most part fours and fives just an iron shot

It would also not be a horrible idea for people with this ball flight to go for a shorter shaft like 44.5-45 making it easier to time and square up.

I had some driver fittings with various brands. I remember my swing speed being 86 mph. One of the fittings put me in a regular flex, the others put me in a stiff flex. When I did decide on the driver that worked best for me, it was a stiff shaft Ping G425 10.5°. I've been very pleased with it, but lately I've been wondering if maybe I should get a regular flex shaft for it. I'm in my mid 50's and I feel like my swing speed might be slowing a bit, although I haven't checked it in a couple of years. I am pretty straight with my driver, with occasional slight right or slight left and just plain bad shots maybe once per round, but that's on me. Similar situation with my irons. The Callaway Apex irons are what I went with. I've found that I'm hitting lower shots and they tend to go slightly left. I'll see if I can get some time with a launch monitor and revisit which shaft flex is right for me. Thank you!

How do you know if the torque is right for you? I never see anyone talk about torque, but I know it matters. I have one driver with a torque of 3, one with a torque of 6, and one with a torque of 8. They are all regular flex, which is the right stiffness for me. The torque of 3 feels stiff, while the 8 feels live, but a bit unpredictable. The 6 seems right to me. If I hit it right, I can feel it absorb, then release energy, giving the ball a nice snap, but not so much that the direction is unpredictable. My personal feeling is that the 6 is about right for me, but I don't know if I'm looking at the right things.

Not always about spees v flex .. i prefer to play a heavy stiffer flex even thou my ss is under 100.. dispersion ia tighter and ball flight for me is more penetrating .. belps keep my spin down to 2300 ..

The correct driver shaft is essential. Mine is a UST 4F2 Senior on my Cobra Radspeed XB.

My club head speed is between 115-117 so although I enjoyed hitting with a regular flex for years…switching to stiff helped me hit the ball straighter and more consistent off the tee.
