There is a big difference between no coin runs and no ring runs.

In Mario, coins are just a bonus.
In Sonic, rings are a gameplay mechanic.

Also, the Studiopolis Act 1 boss should be the end of the run even if you did get past Chemical Plant. I don't need to explain.

Sadly, no mainline 2d sonic game is probably possible without collecting any rings. I dont plan on trying any other ringless challenges in 2d sonic games, but I have some other ideas planned.

Using debug mode is cheating. I cant just use debug mode to skip rings. If I allowed that I might as well go into the level select and just skip to the last level as well.

The thing about this video is that, although it wasn't possible, it was interesting to watch and learn about how you tackled this challenge. I don't watch because I want it to be possible, I watch because I want to see the process it takes to try. I've seen videos that tell me that it's possible but in an uninteresting way. Great video.

I was actually really satisfied with the result.. there’s something about it being impossible that leaves me more satisfied than all the Mario vids where they manage. Sonic rings are just everywhere in most of his games and this was a treat to watch

I thought you'd be able to make it a lot further, knowing that there are a ton of routes you can take. I think we're all just as surprised that it ended so early. But you put a lot of work into this! That whole elaborate character swap is where I would have definitely drawn the line

In the other games, the Debug mode cheat reveals how loops really work. You don't have to run around the loop, you have to pass a threshold near the top of the loop to switch the colision of the loop that you're on. Now im not sure if this works on Mania, or if the ring hitbox is too big to let you reach it, but it's worth looking into if you haven't already.

The hard boiled heavy boss fight in studiopolis makes you automatically pick up 3 rings partway through the fight, it would've been impossible to avoid those too...

This video actually helped me learn that you can cheese the Egg Robo fight in Green Hill Act 2. That boss fight was ridiculous before I knew that fact.
