10 GBE Card on Synology NAS (DS1819+) | 4K TUTORIAL

This is a tutorial on how to install a PCIe 10GBE network card on your Synology NAS. This removes the bottleneck caused by the 1GBE ports on the NAS, which increases potential read and write speeds.

Mostly came here cause I'm trying to install the E10G18-T1 into my DS1621+... and also set up the NAS with a probably three 18TB drives for now. (SHR)

Going into my Mac through a Thunderbolt to 10gbe adapter. Will rarely, if ever, need to access it from another computer outside my house, so except for initial downloads/updates, I'll probably just not connect to the router. I'll just run a long ethernet cable over to it until that's done and then disconnect the cable... until it needs an update or something I guess.

This stuff about IP addresses doesn't really... yeah, hope its not too important to know. 😅

EDIT: Also maybe DSM 7 makes some of this easier, idk.

Cat8 Should be fine right? No downside right? Its so cheap, I can't see a reason for going with older formats. Maybe what I bought isn't true Cat8, but... seems like there's a lot of cheap options online, so I got one and I'm going to try it.

I assume you are using Thunderbolt 3 to 10Gbe Rj45 adapter, correct? Did you test FCPX editing directly from NAS?

I enjoyed the video on setting the Synology DS1819+ to use 10gb, I did have a question and I know lots of people have different ideas on the MTU settings. I noticed you left it at the default of 1500 and was wondering if you tested it set at 9000 or found it better to leave it at 1500, this is not a complaint, just want to know if you tried changing it and if you found it better at 1500 or 9000.

What an awsome video! Quesion: If I have a mac mini (comes with an 10gbe connection built in I think) Can I go directly from the NAS to the mac? Also, would the Synology DS920+ be enough for what I do; I edit 6k braw and that's usually fine of my 200MB extrnal harddrive :) Thank you so much for all your work

Hey man, thank you so much for your wealth of knowledge. Been slowly making my way through all your videos, as I've recently bought a Synology NAS (DS920+). Is there a way of speeding the transfer speed up on this model? It's a 4 bay NAS. I don't think you can add a new PCIe card to them? Is there another way. I use 2 computers at home (a MB Pro M1 Max 32GB, and a Mac Mini M1 16BG). The transfer speeds on my laptop seem way quicker than on my mac mini, which is really annoying, as that's my main computer. I have both a 1GB bond and a 10GB bond on my DSM. 1GB is 10.0.1.X, 10GB is 192.168.0.X. For some reason I cannot connect to DSM or AFP/SMB shares over the 1GB interface. Everything was working until I upgraded my ISP and Router. Can't for the life of me figure it out. The 10GB interface is working fine. Connects to DSM interface in browser, and AFP/SMB shares. Any videos or thoughts?

Hi, thanks for the many tips I really appreciate it. Now I connect 10G in addition to 1G port. I put the IP address you mentioned but it only connects 1G port. What can I do? It seems 10G line is alive but 1G port occupied.

I am new to NAS storage. Before I take the plunge I had a question. Am I able to run this without connecting to my internet correct? I mainly just want it for local storage and video editing. I prefer to keep it offline.

Need help. On the 10Gb IP address we ad in the DSM, do we have to open ports of it in our router as well? Also add other ports? Since the 1Gb has like 5000 and 5001 already..
