Well, we had to wait a while didn’t we, but finally, we can confirm that the brand new official Synology 10Gbe and m.2 NVMe SSD upgrade card is released. I say ‘released’, the Synology E10M20-T1 has been officially launched, which generally means that stock at your local eShop will be landing imminently, but as this is a card that we talked about for the first time in May 2020, most users will be happy just to know that it is REAL and that they can buy it. Synology has been a company that until recent years was more heavily acclaimed by it’s DSM software than it’s hardware. Something that has changed a great deal in the 18, 19 and 20 series generations was the ways in which the company has embarrassed SSD caching in their NAS devices (going as far as to start releasing their own SSD), including NVMe SSD caching in a number of their newer generation devices. Alongside this, though the company has had a reputation for keeping 10Gbe at arms length in the bulk of their range, they have embraced PCIe upgrades in a large number of their devices over the years, typically always arriving in PCIe Gen 3 – opening the door to excellent bandwidth potential for upgrades. Till now the classic dilemma for a Synology user looking to upgrade their PCIe equipped NAS was to choose NVMe SSD caching for improved internal speeds, or a 10Gbe card for upgrading the external speeds. Supplying multiple cards in each category, many users were still not satisfied with the idea of choosing between them. Fast forward to now and we find the Synology E10M20-T1 10Gbe and NVMe SSD combination card that features BOTH of these services, whilst still only occupying a single PCIe slot. So, let’s talk about this new way to upgrade PCIe enabled NAS Diskstation and Rackstation NAS, why you should care about this card and, most importantly, why this is such a big deal.

According to the supprot sheets, the E10M20-T1 officially only supports their own SSD's. Would be amazing if you could test others as soon you get your hand on them!

If I recall correctly, the DS1819+ has only 4 lanes wired on the PCIE Gen3 x 8. What would be the impact on it ?

I ordered one for my DS1618+. According to the Synology website the only compatible NVMEs are the new Synology drives. Do you think it will work with any NVME? Or do I need to buy the overpriced Synology ones?

If I can place my personal whish to you as a specialist:
Please make dedicated tests for different scenarios of NVMe Cards. I work as a film maker and have an IT environment with a lot of huge film-data on my DS1819+.
I suffer a lot from slow copy speeds after my shootingdays (everytime 300GB-1, 5TB new data from all the different cameras.). I have a 10GBit network. The bottleneck is the NAS definitely.
My idea (cost heavy but maybe worth it) with this new "E10M20-T1" card would be to install two "1000GB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 2280" (cause they have MLC memory and don't slow down over the time of copy). I just wonder if this is a good idea to choose Samsung Pros over Synology M.2s (SYNOLOGY SNV3500). The Synologys M.2s are ways cheeper, but don't even come close to the Samsung Pros in terms of specifications. And I even haven't found a reference which kind of memoy (TLC or MLC) is used.
So it would be very interesting to see if there are huge differences in real world (professional) use, or if it is absolutelly fine to just buy two of the cheap SYNOLOGY SNV3500 M.2s.

My use is copying a lot of huge data frequently and also working/cutting directly on the filmdata on this NAS. But the cutting process isn't that much of a problem when using optimized media in my editing program.

And by the way, besides this personal whish of mine, I have to say thank you very much for all of your work you are doing! Really, You and your videos helped me A LOT with my NAS-System in the past!!!
Thanks ahead and greetings from germany :-)

I have to be honest, I do think it is very pricey. However given the devices it is compatible with, no a surprise. However still pricey.

Maybe if the DSM supported NvME storage as well as caching ... However it does expand the life of the devices it would go into.

I bought a e10g18-t1 card for my 1618+ a few months ago. If I put this new one in my nas, can I use the previous one in my Linux server?

I still have my Intel X520 SFP+ Card, I just want a new DS1821+ with actual NVME drive slots and then leave the PCIe slot for 10GB+

So even though I have a PCIe slot in my DS1817+, it's not compatible? :(

Cmon nas makers people want a Nvme small business nas, your selling us all crap Nas's with 5 year old tech with old skool hard drives at 200 Mps and SATA speed Nvme advertising unless we throw thousands into a full top line SMB, Its almost false advertising to keep talking about 10gbe and even 2.5gbe when 95% of the NAS's sold advertising these amazing speeds are limited by the drive interface.. Noticed you never comment everytime anyone asks about the actual m.2 or Nvme speeds

That price is a joke. You can build yourself a complete AMD B450 system with a $20 10gb card off eBay for the money they are asking for this addon that should have been included for what they charge for these.
