Very cool find. Octopus actually have a short life cycle. They live for about 2-5 years. That beast you found was at the end of his.

I might be wrong, but that octopus was probably living the last days of its life. It probably just laid eggs and protected the nest without eating anything. Thus, when you caught it, it isn't that lively and the colors on its skin are fading.

Your octopus is dying right now. A very alive octopus would not be taken like that. He would wrap himself around your arms and try to escape. I have already caught a few octopuses but no one has ever behaved like this

There is a wonderful film called My Octopus Teacher that just won the 2021 Academy Award for best documentary. I am so glad that you let it go. I love octopus, certainly not to eat, but to observe. They are intelligent animals. Glad that you found your lobster. Be well! 🦞
