#WhyIMake (from Infosys Foundation USA) is a campaign to inspire people to make things with their hands, to spread the importance of maker skills and to share resources for doing so. Well-known people such as Nick Offerman and Adam Savage have partnered with the foundation to get out the message. We sat down with Chad Stanton to see what inspires him to make.
Why do you make? Post on any social media platform with the hashtag #WhyIMake, or post your story on the WhyIMake site, and share your story.

It is really nice to hear why people choose their craft. I have always loved the smell of wood. When I was a kid we had a Myrtle tree in the front, a very old cedar in the side, and a 45 foot Douglas fir in the back yard. When the cedar came down, my grandfather made all kinds of things out of it on his lathe, band saw, and table saw. What really inspired me was the length of time it took for the different woods to dry, especially the myrtle. Bowls, candle sticks, picture frames, table tops, cabinets, 3 slotted nut trays with a lazy Susan, etc... my grandfather made it. 40 years later I still call myself a beginner. You are always learning and will never know as much as the person who inspired you to take up the craft.

And the items you make are great! I'm just a hobbiest trying to learn and get better with each project. I do it when I can as a stress release from my day-to-job. Even though my projects don't turn out like I would like them to, I have a lot of fun doing them.

Inspiring message. I didn't get into woodworking until I retired and now at 68, I regret not doing it sooner. I spent my life at professional jobs that didn't leave me any time to do woodworking even as a hobby. Now as my family learned of my new endeavour, many stories have been told of my ancestors as woodworkers. I'm proud of what I do, my customers are happy with whatever project they had me build for them. It's a great feeling to make things with my hands and it's people like you on YouTube that keep me inspired. Thank you, Chad.
