Will Social Media Destroy Democracy?

News broke this month that a data firm, Cambridge Analytica, harvested Facebook data to influence the U.S. presidential election, and likely helped Trump win. And terrifyingly enough, it's not just Trump. Leaders all over the world (Philippines, Myanmar) are using social media to get those likes, shares — oh! and also to spread fake news and propaganda so their people can never know what's true or false again. And all that is terrifying.

Newsbroke should be a daily thing. Once a week just isn't enough Francesca for me! At least do a Sunday, Wednesday, Friday thing and work up to 5 or 6 days a week. Newsbroke should be an internet version of the friendly, local newspaper that would arrive every weekday morning on your porch. Congrats on 40K subs! Next stop: 100K.

Social media is a double edged blade. It’s so new that no one is prepared for the effect it is having. Like anything new, it will take time to learn how to use it effectively and ethically.
