I love seeing rivalry like this, watching sportsmen fight for their country. Great stuff :)

I was 11 years old at the time. It was sucky time for the United States. Just to give a context to it, between 1979 and the 1980 Winter Olympics, the following happened: Three Mile Island nuclear crisis, US Embassy in Tehran is attacked and 52 US diplomats and personnel were taken hostage, American Airlines Flight 191 crashes and around 215 people are killed, Chrysler is forced into bankruptcy and the US government is forced to bail it out, we endured a brutal winter of 1979, there were horrible storms in the Spring of 1979 killing more than 1000 in one single tornado storm alone, the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski mail bombed Northwest University, the Soviets gain influence and power in Nicaragua, NORAD computers go bonkers and US officials received incorrect information of a massive Soviet nuclear strike against the United States, the Ayatollah Khomeini gives false reports to Pakistan claiming the US was causing trouble at the Grand Mosque in Mecca - before the report was proven wrong, the US Embassy in Pakistan is fire bombed killing more US diplomats. Of course, this is also prompted by the Iranian Revolution where the US backed Shah was overthrown and kicked out of the country. This caused a second major energy crisis (the first being in 1973) and oil went from around 15USD per barrel to over 60USD per barrel! The US economy slipped from inflation to flat out stagflation and millions hated Jimmy Carter's ineffectual "leadership." Plus, this was also at the height of the cold war between the Soviet Union and the US. Needless to say, we *needed* this win. It made me feel so freaking proud of my country.

Imagine pulling the best goalie you have just cause he missed one save

I'm really surprised they didn't include Al Michaels' famous "Do you believe in miracles? YES!!!" call at the end.

I remember back in 1979-80 the U.S. PREPARED for the Winter Olympics the correct way with PHYSICAL CONDITIONING and TACTICS along with having the Best GOALIE that Year!

They weren't just confident they could beat even our best pros... they did just that, 6-0, against the NHL all stars. That CCCP team was the best hockey team ever assembled.

you can really see how fast the game is with Eruzione's goal, the overhead camera angle doesn't capture how fast he was skating, or how fast his release was.

All of those Soviet players could’ve played in the NHL. For a bunch of college kids to take them down, we’ll never see anything like it again. Truly a miracle

Before the Russian goalie sat down for the rest of the game the US already scored 3 goals on him. Didn't matter if he stayed in or out the US was going to have its way.

interesting seeing Dan Snow, who I'm used to seeing in some medieval fort or some such place, discuss a great sports moment

Interesting that the greatest sporting moment in both US and Canada are hockey.

Wow, hearing the BBC commentary. Very much like the way they call soccer!

Also also it would've been so sad if the US lost to Finland in the finals
