Hell, a government contractor with ALL of our personal data was just hacked. So, in spite of doing everything right, we are still vulnerable due to government incompetence. Organization that have our data, and don't do everything possible to protect that data (like encryption of data at rest) should be held liable. Maybe then, they will do their due diligence, as required by law.

Unfortunately a lot of the time your information is stolen from a "trustworthy" 3rd party. Or like in my case, stolen information from an organization.

Ok, here's the problem - because of the most recent breach, I am trying to freeze my accounts through all 3 credit bureaus. - 2 of them were easy enough, but the 3rd one requires me to type the "pass-code" they text me before I can freeze. - So the problem is I never got it. (Yes, I clicked "re-send.") I realize LOTS of people are trying to freeze their credit right now, but what good is it to freeze only 2 accounts, when the 3rd one won't let me?

This is all wrong.... provide name, date of birth and address... thats it... remove all previous information linked on your credit report... all old addresses... employment details... old phone numbers... if they fail to comply you can sue for $2500 in a small claims court after 45 days...

We can't control what insecure back end the medical/financial/government agencies use. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we are well beyond the age where the vast majority of identity thefts are the direct fault of the victim.

When signing up with these bureaus, two of three ask for the last 4digits of ssn, but Equifax asks for the whole thing. Didn’t they get breached a while back? Isn’t that worrisome that they ask for the full ssn when the other two ask for the last4?
