One of the things I like best about this series is discussion of the business side of the guitar and music store industry. It's tremendously educational. No place else tackles this topic.

💯percent correct! I’ve been playing guitar for over 50 yrs and made 1, 000s of pawn shop laps shopping for gear. I’ve only seen 1 or 2 Fernandez guitars in all that time … however I’ve bought 4 Fernandez Sustainiac pickup kits to hot rod some Telecasters and I love them🎸😎

Thank you, Phil for all you do! You spoke of playing guitar during the week, my original bass player from the band I played in starting 50 years ago came back to New Jersey from California. Of the 6 of us (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bassist, drummer, front man/singer, and trumpet/keyboard (Hammond organ/Leslie, Rhodes, ARP Strings and MiniMoog), 4 members of the band were 18+ years old. This allowed us to play in places that sold alcohol. At the time, I was the keyboard/trumpet player and along with the drummer we were at the time 14 years old, working Friday and Saturday nights at the same place for 3 months at a time and making $50.00 a night and playing 3 sets each of 40 minutes of music. Those days are long gone and clubs with live bands is few and far between. So, now we play for ourselves and our families. But, we are still here 50 years later. The point being that in music, age means nothing. The love of playing an instrument (I first picked up a guitar 14 years years ago when my son gave me 2 guitars when I was in the middle of recovering from a long illness). The guitar bug bit me and I love playing the instrument, I still love playing keyboards and trumpet, the point being that music, whichever instrument one might play, is a lifetime endeavor.

Thank you, Phil. It's been a crappy summer - I lost my mom to brain cancer and now I've got Covid pretty bad. All I can do is watch videos. This took my mind off of the nasty symptoms for two hours. Much appreciated.

For those who didn't know, VH's brown M&M thing didn't have anything to do with M&M's. It was all about knowing that they read the entire rider.

I work in coatings and wood finishing. PLEASE never stain Rosewood. Unless it's been chemically damaged please don't. It's got all the colour it needs to look good. Most dark stains tend to make it muddy looking. Most toner stains and dyes tend to give it no favours in looks either. It's a dark wood and dark wood looks horrible when you stain it. Stick to Linseed Oil or similar finish, and just enjoy how it ages. Chef's kisses.

That Marcus Miller Breakdown/ Slap Bass video is the most fascinating video I've seen lately!
Thanks for highlighting it and thank you for doing this podcast weekly for 7+ years now!

1:33:00 The absolute best strap locks are Straptight locks. Just simple pieces of flexible plastic that are like rubber washers but way easier to put on, super thin so they work with any straps, and don’t tear over time.

Squier is an amazing brand for the cost. Jack Pearson uses these as his guitar of choice for most of his live performances. He could probably get endorsements for any brand he wants and has other guitars at home that he likely uses for studio work, but his stage instruments are stock squier and he sounds amazing.

My 1998 mim fender has been all around the world. Played thousands of shows and studio recordings. Still use it today

Fernandes were hard to come by in the US. Fernandes was more popular in japan and had artists playing them. Few people know about fernanedes and if they did they assume its was a low budget brand.

I learned most of what I know about electric guitars and building them from watching you tube guys like you, Dylan and many others. resulting in my extreme built of a total over the top Strat.. and more projects to add to my collection coming. more to come. next will be a classic design Esquire. learning even more from each build as I go.

Phil, in my humble opinion has the right voice to pursue a side gig doing voice work in radio/TV advertising or public announcements. So smooth and calm with a soothing quality. She could announce a giant asteroid headed for Earth and it wouldn’t
Incite any panic—so chill. 😬.
Kinda like a late night DJ of old on a rock or jazz channel. Your a lucky man to have her help you with all of your endeavors—she supports your preferred obsession/profession and GAS, handles your merch sales and shipping of them, does all the other things to help keep your household running smoothly and then happens to have that voice for intro to your podcast. Man, sometimes the generosity and understanding of women is simply astounding. Kudos man—you are a lucky guy.

Thank you, Phil! Listening live today made a "Typically Hellacious" task on a BMW X5 AWD significantly less-so! Unfortunately, there was still too much "Task" left @ the end of the Show😭 I too, check ALL "vintage" MIJ entries on Reverb daily! Only recently did I discover that Fernandes had NEW PRODUCTS!! Yeah, WHO KNEW?? AIO Guitars DOES offer an XLNT Modern/Update on the MIJ Fernandes MA-55 design (one of my faves). The Beat Goes On!!

I remember back in the early 2000s my favorite band at the time ( Norma Jean) was sponsored by Fernandes and I went out and bought a revelle. It was like a swoopy looking les paul. It was a beautiful guitar but the electronics were a little wonky, but still a part of my life. RIP.

You are absolutely right about used Fender and Gibson prices. My 2009 SG Faded Special is worth the same as I paid for it now. My 1973 SG Standard is also worth the same now as I paid for it in 2013.

I agree on the Fender Rumble amp
I have one that is more than enough for at home, and even many jamming scenarios
And on top of the sound, they are so light and easy to move.

23:20 the reason why FGN is probably not pushing hard is probably for the same reason Cort isn't pushing as hard as you'd think they would.

FujiGen has a lot of contracts with many other brands (most notably Ibanez Prestige and Fender Japan's JV line) and make far more guitars for them than they do their in-house FGN brand.

FGN is pretty much relegated to the same position Cort is for Cor-Tek (who also make more guitars for other brands than they do for themselves).

That being said, I've got a couple of them myself (as well as a few of the ones they make for Japanese Domestic brands like History and Cool Z), and they're awesome. You could probably score an FGN JOS for around half or less the price of a Ibanez Prestige AZ and get roughly the same guitar without the Ibanez brand mark-up (or Ibanez exclusive Seymour Duncan Hyperion pickups, they're usually SD JBs). Same thing with a Cort and a Premium AZ.

I like the blue stage light, still in-shot.
Normally, when I see the boom mike in a TV show I make a note in a book I have.
