Spencer Smith studies the brain. But the UNC School of Medicine assistant professor grew frustrated when traditional microscopes weren't good enough to show the kind of brain activity he wanted to see. So he and co-inventor Jeffrey Stirman built a revolutionary new microscope that's "like Google Maps, where we can actually start to zoom out and see this satellite-level view of brain activity."
