DON'T TURN YOUR SHOULDERS in the Golf Swing?! (The Shocking Truth)

How do the shoulders really work in the golf swing? "Don't Turn Your Shoulders in the Golf Swing" is common golf swing advice on YouTube, but you need to know that the shoulder turn is an important part of the golf swing and it gets your golf swing working correctly. When you learn how to turn your shoulders like in this golf tip, you will see your ball striking improve tremendously.

Anatomically speaking the shoulders don’t “turn” – “turn” is just a term golf instructors use to explain how the shoulders work because it’s easier for golfers to understand. One of the main functions of the shoulders is to “turn”. Turning creates power and gives you more distance with less effort.

Another function that helps the shoulders move correctly is “tilt”. You need to tilt in the golf swing if you want to hit the ball solidly. A swing without tilt would be a baseball player – you’d never be able to hit the ball off the ground!

If we were to imagine that you “don’t turn your shoulders” in the golf swing, we would have to eliminate a critical piece necessary to play great golf. Let’s say I remove the “turn”…now what am I left with to swing? If you remove the “turn” you would only be left with “tilt” – and tilt alone cannot make a powerful and repeatable golf swing.

Sure, tilt is important, but it is not everything…the golf swing is made of parts that when put together create the whole. This is why you can’t do ALL TURN and NO TILT, or ALL TILT and NO TURN. You need to combine TURN and TILT to play the best golf of your life.

In this video you’ll see why you need to turn your shoulders in the golf swing, and how NOT turning them can be very damaging to your golf game.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.

My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.

My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

You’re one funny dude! I get so tired of seeing all the “Don’t turn your shoulders” videos on my feed. Your stack & tilt instruction has improved my swing 100%.

Stack and Tilt is power.
I went in for a free driver fitting at a Golf Galaxy last Saturday since they had a promotion. When I started hitting golf balls in Tracman the fitter was amazed that my consistent clubhead speed was 105 MPH. He told me that he had many people in recently for a fitting, and people would try to kill the ball and send the ball severely to the right. He asked me how I got that speed so consistently. I told him about Stack and Tilt and Tom Saguto. He said he knew of you, Tom since other people have mentioned you. I told him STACK AND TILT IS POWER! People need to stop being afraid of Stack and Tilt and try it and see if it works for them.
I upgraded to a Titleist TSR3 10-degree loft with a stiff flex shaft. Can't wait to take it out this season.

Great Video!! For many years, I was guilty of taking a big turn, without sufficient tilt. Sometimes my head would move laterally, just enough, to put those lovely sod head covers on my irons 😂 Staying still is definitely a skill, as I have been watching your videos for the last several years. Now my focus is my left shoulder on the backswing and my right shoulder in the downswing (tilt), without picking my arms up (a good tilt takes care of that). My swing plane has greatly improved, leading to crisp ball striking, and there have been many rounds in the 70's because of it. I like the feel of staying stacked over the ball, as it's powerful, and I practice these fundamentals constantly. fantastic video that is all you need to play great golf!!!

Hi Tom, Your instructions have literally transformed my game. What a difference! Hitting the ball straighter and further. Went round the New Course in St Andrews Scotland last week with gross 87. Next target of sub 80 seems possible this year 🎉 Thanks for pushing the fundamentals with such consistency. It takes a while to get everything bedded in, but your videos keep emphasising the important basics line upon line, precept upon precept to get us across the line to better and better golf. Thank you😊

Thanks for making this video. Shoulder turn might be the single most crucial part of the swing. In fact, people should be taught to first make a full shoulder turn, then worry about where the arms/hands go. So many people focus on the hands and arms, but don't even think about the shoulder turn. Jack Nicklaus said his famous teacher, Jack Grout, made sure Jack "completed the backswing", which essentially means "make a full shoulder turn" (on full shots, of course).

Love your videos @Tom. Your advice has changed my game completely.

Brilliant video. The day I realized that my hands were connected to the movement of my left shoulder, is the day I realized how much power is transferred by the movement/turn of the left shoulder to the left and back.

Tom, besides the shoulder turn I learned to chase the ball down the swing path by watching your videos. You stay down for a long time. Don't know if you've talked about it but I've copied it for great results!

Hey Tom, Great content. Using much of your suggested swing moves I've found that foot work is where everything starts. You should revisit your instruction in this area.

True enough Tom.
The shoulders will follow the arms. To be fair, I’ve been turning too far, causing me to look like I’m standing up out of my swing path.
Thanks for talking about too much of a turn, that’s my problem, and it makes me look like I’m standing up out of my path. Thanks, Joe.
