Manolo gets his Mariachi band friends, the Rodriguez brothers (voices of Gabriel Iglesias, Cheech Marin, and Ricardo Sanchez), to help serenade her. The brothers play some tunes (like Biz Markie's "Just A Friend"), none of which impress Maria. It is only then that Manolo serenades her with a song from his heart.

Though Manolo was obviously going to be Maria's choice in the end, it isn't fair to say Joaquin was a bad choice. He did care about Maria, and loved her just as much, he was just a bit too arrogant for her tastes. In the end, he doesn't hold a grudge against his friend at all, which is surprising considering how a lot of movies play out.
