I self-admitted to the ER for severe suicidal ideation back in 2017, but had no health insurance. That bill utterly destroyed me financially and I regret ever seeking help. Surviving one night was not worth the years of depression brought on by living paycheck to paycheck and desperately trying to work with the debt collectors. It backlogged the other debts I was already focusing on, which has had a domino effect still to this day. And all just to have them tell me I didn't qualify for a bed or medication because I "seem smart enough to find help on my own." 11 hours under guard, discharged at 10:30 p.m. in a city I didn't know. I suppose I ought to be grateful I didn't call 9-1-1.
