This great song by "Starland Vocal Band" was released in 1976 and was one of the best selling singles of that year. The song was written by "Bill Danoff" who was one of the band members, i just love the lyrics to this one.

As a "rock and roller" type teenager, (17 that year) I didn't like this song then. That summer I was into rock and prog bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Alice Cooper, Alan Parsons, Blue Oyster Cult, Utopia, Beatles, Stones...But now, some 40 years later, having spent my entire adult life as a full-time audio engineer, studio/ live musician and music producer, I listen to this in a completely different way. Incredible harmonies, a super-melodic hook, great performances from the studio musicians - not to mention the incredible harmonies from the vocalists - ( no auto-tune then!) and sonically, it was also very well-recorded; warm, silky top end, rich fidelity ( analog consoles and 2" tape! ). Great sounding acoustic 12 string, pedal steel... and while I can't stand the "sound" of the drums from that time period, ( very "boxy" sounding, not just with this song but with many others from that time), it was the Late, Great Billy Cobham who played drums on this track, and he was absolutely locked-down ( of course, it was Billy Cobham!) and he created a very nice, relaxed, laid-back feel with very nice dynamics. Truthfully, I still don't "love" the song, but I have certainly developed an honest respect for it over the years. FWIW

My mom was born in 1927, when this song came out, she used to sing it all around the house until she found out what it was truly about, she lived in a time, where you just did not do this stuff in the afternoon, she called the radio station to get it off the air!!

Loved this song from being 14 years old and the long hot summer of 1976. I'd love to step back in time and see people again no longer with us. Until then this song will take me right back. Thank you Starland Vocal Band.

I was 12 years old in 1976. England was having one of its hottest summers on record and in my home town, London, this song was playing everywhere....lovely memories.

Great memories of a much simpler time. Life was much easier back then and the music was much better. Man, I feel sorry for today's generation of children

I remember that year. It was terrific and wonderful. Patriotism was alive and well for a minute or two. It was nice.

This song makes me want to leave home, and drive off spontaneously to Calfornia without telling any of my friends, for some reason

Something about this tune. Just great...Good vocals, good topic and the fun of having a fantastic time. I do like coming back every now and then just to listen to a legendary sing.

LOL, I remember I was in 5th grade when this song came out, and I would sing it around the house. Mom didn't like that too much....such great memories.

When I was a kid I loved that plane sound. Never realized what the song was really about.😂

Beautiful! I was only 10 years old when this song first came out. If only we could go back to those much simpler carefree times. The music was so much better.

This takes me back to the 1970's when I was a teenager and hearing this song on the AM radio. Then I remember realizing what the meaning of the words were !
