What is the difference between Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder?

This video describes the difference Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder. The diagnosis of Hypochondriasis no longer exists and was split into Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder. Most individuals with the old diagnosis of Hypochondriasis would now be diagnosed with Somatic Symptom Disorder. Somatic Symptom Disorder is characterized by excessive worry about medical conditions and involves physical symptoms such as pain or fatigue. Illness Anxiety Disorder is similar, however, there are no physical symptoms or minor physical symptoms. Both disorders are characterized by a preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious medical condition, anxiety, and excessive checking for symptoms.

I have a question... I have been failed by numerous medical professionals for a long, long time even to the point of life threatening (doctor misdiagnosed my baby who had lead poisoning, I was misdiagnosed when I had low potassium, and on and on)... so I do advocate for myself with research and finding ways to help myself without a medical professional... no doubt I could have illness anxiety disorder as a result of so many doctors failing me but how would I convince someone it is not the "somatic" reasons that I do what I do...???

thank you for clarifying the difference. still not really understanding the need for splitting this into 2 diagnoses particularly when it seems that differential diagnosis would be quite difficult due to the similarity and it seems pretty subjective for what could constitute a severe or non severe symptom since some symptoms can be indicators for severe or mild disease but then again i'm never going to understand why the DSM does or does not do anything. why split these disorders and not add spectrums for personality disorders? seems a bit nonsensical. either way none of this is your fault of course, thanks for the helpful video.

I think i have it because of coronavirus.
I was diagnosed with panic disirder but now it is different from what i feel. I think i really have illness anxiety because i constantly check like every hour my temperature. I feel sick but my temperature is always normal.

Along the way to winning disability due to acute migraine, my file with the Usual Major D w/o PF got tagged with Somatic Symptom Disorder . I'm watching Dr. Grande thinking, "Wait, so much of that sounds like the migraines, and photophobia, making me ill!" Sometimes I have to ponder the chicken and egg "which came first" nature of things. I suppose on the one, "medical hand" I have Chronic Acute Migraine with Bilateral Discomfort, Photophobia, And DES (Dry Eye Syndrome). On the psych hand, I have also now have a corresponding "somatic illness disorder". Which again, I sort of have to protest b/c I have to worry about my future, who else will? Is labeling people with invisible illness as having somatic symptom disorder not pathologizing normal worry at taking ill? On the other third hand, if y provider saw fit, I can also report, a couple years down the road, post-winning my disability case and relaxing, I'm not so "somatic". Anyway, thank you!
