A film that looks at the genius of JMW Turner in a new light. There is more to Turner than his sublime landscapes - he also painted machines, science, technology and industry. Turner's life spans the Industrial Revolution, he witnessed it as it unfolded and he painted it. In the process he created a whole new kind of art. The programme examines nine key Turner paintings and shows how we should re-think them in the light of the scientific and Industrial Revolution. Includes interviews with historian Simon Schama and artist Tracey Emin.

Duration: 60 min.

His greatest work. It is the finest self portrait to ever grace a canvas. His darling was the ultimate expression of his art in that time. Knowing that he was being led by industry towards a future that he did no longer belong to. The painting of nature and architecture, light and dark, souvenirs of lands unseen. All to be replaced by photography and technology. Passing silently over still waters to a romantic end. Turner captured perfectly what could not be seen. Feelings of emotions through the eyes of his soul.

My favourite artist of all. The first time I saw one of his paintings, and read the notes, I thought "yes, this is the real thing." It might not be his most visually spectacular work, but for me his most iconic: Rain, Steam and Speed.

There are so many artist that are well known through out time can you image not knowing any artist every time I discover an artist it's like eating a new meal that stimulates the senses this is how I feel about turner. I have a meal every time I learn about more and more artist I discover and this is just past artist. I'm an artist I want to be just like them. I can't help but giving credit to the creator of heaven and earth people don't realize or forget that lookng at the tree's the flower and people who created all these wonderful works it's the creator, we just copy his work. This is just being humbly honest and in awe.

I like Constable & Tuner, they've inspired me with my art.
I find it fascinating that Constable didnt like Tuner as a person - but admired his work. There's an old saying never meet your heroes.

Excellent Documentary. You can tell this was produced by the Beebs. The pains and the lengths they went to, to not mention the most important event that would rock the world that also happened to start in 1775.

that connection between turners painting and electromagnetism is a bit far fetched. the documentary, however, is brilliant! admiration for turner from germany

It was fantastic to have a glimpse of that notebook as they were referred to frequently in the bio of him I have just read. Fascinating.
