it's because china doesn't export entertainment, it only exports everything else 😅

There’s definitely a political context to this too. Culture-drivers/influencers in the “Western” world aren’t going to want to embrace Chinese culture as it draws a significant amount of ridicule from Western audiences due to the geopolitics involved. Pretty hard for the Western world to respect Chinese culture given that they’re literally direct adversaries

Hong Kong Cinema was a huge part of American pop culture before the handover. Even today it has a lasting effect on American pop culture and cinema.

One of the reasons I feel is when people say good shit about Chinese culture or Chinese whatever, people get suspicious and think it’s propaganda

China has its own cultural sphere that’s almost incomprehensible to the western audience

Korea is not as old as Japan? Can David & Andrew plz check a history book first. Korea is way older than japan, they didn't just suddenly show up in the 1950s. Where do they think Japanese people even come from?

Why does China need to be cool😂 cool is a culture from the west, and China is a totally unique form of culture on the other side of the world. In addition, China was still a developing country in the early 2000 back then. while Japan and Korea were already developed countries in 2000, Chinese people were building their infrastructures. It is common for people to focus on the material life first before they have more room for cultural reciprocity. Not a fair comparison.

You guys hit really valid points that I’ve been talking for a LONG time. Both Korea and Japan have something in common with the US. WORLD WAR. US practically brought capitalism to SK after the korean war and we all know what happened to japan during WW2. Both countries have adapted capitalistic ideals that the US has brought over to these countries. The idea that creativity or entertainment can be used to leave cultural footprint.

China is 10, 000 years old, Korea is 5, 000 years old, and Japan is 2, 000 years old. Get your facts right.

Why are these guys talking about history without knowledge lol.
1. Korea is a much older civilization than Japan.
2. Korea was also a closed nation even more than China was.
3. Most of Japanese culture in ancient times came from Korea. (Like pottery, Archery etc)
4. Remember that the Manchurians conquered Ming (Chinese) and the culture transition to Qing really hurt China.
5. Japan only recently became a power in Asia. (Prior to 1900's there weren't really that relevant in East Asian history except for some invasions like Imjin War or the Pirate wars in Chinese coast).
6. China hurt themselves with the cultural evolution and the censor they put on their media.

Korrection: Korean history is older than Japanese history. Also, Manchuria was dominated by a Korean kingdoms, Goguryeo and Balhae until 9th Century. Then the Khitans, then Mongols, and finally, Jurchens took over. Of course, Jurchens (Manchurians) became the ruler of China in the 17th Century.

Must be a generational thing cause I grew up on Hong Kong cinema, and Chinese Food.

5:00 You got that part wrong. Japanese people, specifically the Yayoi immigrants that are now the ancestors of modern day Japanese people, came via Korea. Korea had their own warring states period much earlier than Japan as the people settled the mainland and then the connected Korean peninsula first before the Japanese islands(which made sense). As a result, by the time Japan had their warring states period, Korea had already been a unified entity for hundreds of years. So you are just plain wrong in your history there.

As a white American who is learning Mandarin, I don’t think Chinese culture is cool, in the sense that it’s super popular in media and entertainment. But I do find it fascinating, which is arguably more important. I love learning about daily life from a Chinese perspective, more so than I would enjoy pop music or dramas. But I don’t really care for those things even in English, let alone in an Asian language.

Not just in the west bro. Even people in china love Japanese and Korean culture such as Kpop and manga. I believe those countries have the environment to allow those subcultures to grow and flourish.

To my knowledge Korea is older than Japan. The first known Korean empire was founded on 2333 BCE and the first known Japanese empire was founded on 660BCE.
