"I'm afraid I can't do that" Hal was the EXACT vibe they were going for

Dwight Schultz is a brilliant actor. He played Capt. "Howling Mad" Murdock on the original A-Team tv series which he had a wide range of characteristic personalities.

Lt. Broccoli is one of my favorite characters in all of Star Trek. In a world where people have largely conquered their demons, Reg does battle on the daily and triumphs. Dwight Schultz is a brilliant actor having formerly starred as PTSD escaped mental patient and soldier 'Howling Mad" Murdoch on The A-Team. His character is nuanced and inspirational. His struggles and successes make fans of TNG aspire to their own greatness. Barclay is legend. One of my all time favorite supporting characters in the ST cannon.

As a teen I identified with Wesley, but as an adult I identify with Barclay. I love that Star Trek has him. This is the elite of the elite staff on the flagship. Barclay is THAT good, but he still has problems, and things to learn, he's still immensely human. It's awesome.

I hope they kept a record of how to travel 30, 000 light years in a matter of seconds, that knowledge would come in handy if a ship ever got stranded in some distant quadrant of the galaxy...

Barclay episodes are always fun, as they tend to be both outlandish and relatable, and generally uplifting.

Barclay gets upgraded by a probe. Best episode summary ever. 😆

This video generates a pleasant electro-chemical stimulus response in my brain.

That's the thing, Barclay wasn't even being evil. His mind became so all-encompassing that he could conceive all those new concepts, could calculate that everything would be okay, but couldn't communicate that enough to everyone else to reassure them. It's actually very ironic. Starfleet is all about exploring the unknown, but at the cusp of plunging straight into it with that graviton field they kinda panicked and tried to unplug Barclay. Understandable, they didn't really know what kind of alien influence he might have been under, but striking nevertheless.

Nice that you picked up the 2001 link - he even paraphrases some of Hal's dialog e.g. "I'm afraid I can't do that Captain"

One of my favorite episodes. Barclay is a great character. He's not "perfect" and thus for many is vary relatable. And to go suddenly from his awkward personality to near god-like makes for a great story arch.

Troi was smart to recognize Barclay losing his (programmed?) arrogance/confidence at the end and to push for the date in order to prevent him from retreating back to his shell.

As much as I'd like to believe that, if I joined Starfleet, I'd model myself after Picard, Riker, Geordi, even Worf or Data to some extent, but the truth be known, I'd probably be more of a Barclay. And that's okay. (Did I mention that I also have a divergent neurotype?)

"How do you feel?" "Smaller." "Just plain old Barclay." Sorta sad in a way.
