Bye Gentoo 👋 Why I Am Going Back To Arch...

Well I need to get a lot of work done for the channel and Gentoo is causing me issues. I love Portage as a package manager, but brothers it's literally the best and worst package manager simultaneously.

I need to edit videos like this, but kdenlive and every other video editor I tried to install wouldn't because of qt dependencies. Now I only tried to install three and Olive is a fork of kdenlive as far as I am aware. So maybe I could've got another installed; however, should I though? I'd have to learn it and then edit the video. Until I want to install another distribution I will be working from my laptop. 😅

Thank you for watching and hope you have a wonderful rest of the day!

That's one of the reasons why I use Gentoo (or any other distro TBH) just for the really base packages. The rest is either Flatpak or Nix. I use it almost like an immutable distro.
This idea of installing everything from the distro repos if flawed in opinion.

These sorts of issues are what make immutable / image based distros really appealing to me, the atomic nature of "It either ALL upgrades, or it doesn't upgrade at all" is comforting.

There are still some problems that need to be worked out (whether that is with me, or those distros, I don't know yet) until I actually move over - but I've gotta say, that specific aspect is very very appealing.

Basically, the idea is that a computer can be used productively. When this is not the case, it is time for another solution. Therefore, I have a computer with which I experiment and a computer for production.

Gentoo seems cool, but I could smell the issues already. Well, I mainly don't want to unmask packages by hand.

Less than ideal admittedly but all you needed to was remerge qtcore and qtgui to fix this, come ask us next time. QT6 fixes this issue though for good fwiw.

Arch is for noobs. Intermediate users use Gentoo. Pros use LFS.

To be honest I think the only thing you needed to do was disable vulkan in one of the package conflicts. I do understand the frustration though, in my experience with gentoo which is daily for almost the last 10 years or so as soon as you start adding in QT stuff that’s when the shit starts hitting the fan with the conflicts

Sounds like me with Arch a while back. I move to Void, never looked back. The straw that broke the camel's back was firefox taking 30 seconds to start on Arch, prob not Arch's fault but I left.

ya, it's hard. but anything worth it, takes time. learning portage, is a pain. pro tip, dual boot. then you can still have a working environment while you get your gentoo working. I installed most things, including x, plasma, nvidia drivers, etc, through arch-chroot. Of course, it still takes forever, but its a source based distro. of course it's going to take hours to compile. The compilation is part of the attraction.

So you want to have a cake and eat it. Want to use Gentoo but don't want to learn about version specifiers.

Distrobox, my bro. Distrobox. It solves all things.

If Gentoo was a car brand you'd be in total control of valve timing, fuel mixture, belt timing, ... Yes it would be like a formula one car but you wouldn't want to drive that to commute to work everyday.

Arch stopped my distro hoping in 2021. I know It is a meme but for me it just works. I only had one serious breakage with infamous grub thingy but even that was very easy to fix.

Please tell me you are not using any testing packages. I usually see these complaints when users go willy nilly enabling ~amd64.

I love Gentoo, but it's not great for things like video production. Here's a guide on how to decide which distro to use for anyone interested:

Install Arch when you have newer or older hardware that requires closed source drivers, when you need a distro that is cutting edge, and you don't have time to compile everything and just need binaries.

Install Gentoo on older hardware for an easier time, or newer hardware for a harder time. Gentoo is going to be better for people who want to add or remove features of open source software before compiling and installing. Use Gentoo if you are ready to spend more time getting your OS configured than using it. Don't use Gentoo if you just want to use your OS and not worry about problems arising. Gentoo is a learning tool for better understanding what's under the hood.

wonder if PREFIX could workaround these issues by having different one for each of these troublemakers, at the cost of disk space ofc

Been using gentoo as a desktop for more than 5 years. Fell for the meme too. Getting back to arch now as well. Gentoo has some bad habits. And it will stay on laptop now.

I will probably use gentoo with distrobox in the future just so i can say "fuck it" when i cant be bothered.
