I usually just lick the wires, and see if it tastes like 120v

"I made the coil like the video."
Coil actually has WAY more rotations than the original.

I genuinely love that not only do you expose frauds making videos, but you also bring to life cool things that actually DO work

One of my Navy instructors recommended this man for helping with understanding deeper into electronics. I still watch him 5 years on.

I love it when people say "don't try this at home", while they try it at home lol

It's called a darlington transistor. It's super sensitive, and you can stagger them and make them even more sensitive.

The stacked Darlington configuration is really fascinating. It's amazing how sensitive these transistors can be when combined.

It's quite clear that it's more entertainment than education, but I know many of us would really appreciate when you go over the principles that make things like this work such as the electric induction

It works because the the antenna is connected to the transistor base which when detects positive voltage as an NPN allows higher current to pass through and a series of NPN transistors amplify the positive radiation to be shown on an LED, it can detect current from your body too if you use 5 NPN transistors wired the same way.

AC is alternating current, which means the current flips multiple times per second.

Electricity flowing through wires creates a magnetic field, and changing electric current creates a changing magnetic field.

Changing magnetic fields induce current in wires within the field.

So I guess it could just be using induction to detect when there is AC current nearby, with the copper wire loop being used as a sort of transformer, where the field induces current in the loop, which results in the transistors having enough current applied to their gates to light up the LED?

This is from about 2 minutes of observation, and isn't a perfect breakdown, but seems to be the best answer I can give.
