Michael Phelps won his 18th Gold, and 22nd total medal, to cap his swimming career. In his last swimming event, the 4x100 Medley Relay, Phelps, along with Brendon Hansen, Matthew Grevers, and Nathan Adrian, held off the Australians and Chinese to take the gold medal. In the Women's 4x100 Medley Relay, the team of Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer, and Allison Schmidtt set a new world record. With these final swimming events, the U.S. Swim Team has continued another era of dominance in the pool.

Michael Phelps technically and statistically is the greatest olympian ever. Those saying there are better like carl lewis, well that's your opinion. I understand your argument and yes one can win more medals in swimming because it's more diverse. It also mean one has to train harder and longer to match its diversity. Its weird tha your disagreeing with a fact (# of medals) and backing it up with an opinion. You can argue technicalities, but you shouldn't present an opinion as if it's a fact

@TheFlownominal32
-and with him being considered #1, people by default consider him greatest (which in choice of word automatically makes it an opinion.)
So you're right maybe I should've used a different word, he's not the greatest but he is still logistically #1

@TheFlownominal32 It's his determination and fame that he brought to his sport. That's what matters. I hate swimming but every race Phelps was in, I was pumped and excited. I hope you realize that medals isn't the only thing that he was able to accomplish. If there's any athlete in history who was better, it would have to be Jordan. Carl Lewis was a beast but he wasn't as good as phelps. I'm sorry.

Saying he's TECHNICALLY the greatest olympian is not my opinion its a fact. Its also a technicality which has a lot of sides to it. In competing there always has to be a #1. The olympics are the epitome of competing sports-wise. Right now the only unopinionated way of determining that #1 is by numbers which goes to medal count. Yes he is the most decorated and saying that anything is great is already an opinion but by default he is the closest to #1. Maybe not greatest but #1

Swimmers get a medal every time they win a ace. Something like basketball you pretty much can't lose a game and you can only win one medal. Swimmers can lose an event and still have the chance to win a bunch of medals. If you say he's the greatest olympian based off his medals, fine, but if you say he's the greatest athlete of all time, you know nothing about sports.
