what about Imax movies? For example, "The dark knight rises" was shot in IMAX and the aspect ratio keep changing from 21:9 to 16:9 depending on the scene... Would black bars appear on the side instead?

I have a far cheaper option. Watch movie at night, lights off, against a black wall. No more black bars. Ta da.

The biggest problem is that the majority of the movies getting released have the black bars encoded in the video file, so they can reach the 16:9 aspect ratio. Instead of just leaving the movie at about 1920 x 815, they've been actually hardcoding the black bars into them to make them 1920 x 1080.

Hey man, I just got my UltraWide LG 29UM55 in today. I am impressed, though not totally captivated by the aspect ratio. I believe that my experience with my 1440p monitor has spoiled me, so my next purchase will be the new 3440x1440 ultrawide g-sync monitor. It being 34" and 1440p will make me love it even more. Also, my monitor overclocked to 96hz is hard to get over. 60 isn't near as smooth for me anymore. I will say The Witcher 3 is so far my favorite game to experience at 21:9.

Are you playing that from a bly ray disk? As I can not play blu ray films from disk in full screen on a 21:9 unless i use aspect ration correction in vlc, which makes things look slightly too wide. It seems the films have been filmed in 21:9 but are encoded in 16:9 format destroying one of the benefits of buying these damn screens, one which the manufacturers promoted!

Is it possible to change a 16:9 movie file to 21:9 on a laptop without the monitor? Because I'm just trying to get rid of black bars for a video I'm making. (I use Sony Vegas if this helps)

Having an ultra wide, I can say that it is not that easy. Some streaming platforms do it right but then there are some hopeless assholes like Disney which added the black bars on the top and bottom of their movies to the video file itself. Go fullscreen on an ultra wide and you will not only have black bars at the bottom and top like on a 16:9 monitor, but also on the sides. The entire action of the movie happens within a quarter of the full display size. I can't put it different but this should be fucking punished by death.

So, then why does amazon put black bars around the ENTIRE movie, not just top and bottom for 21:9 movies ultrawide / cinemascope? That's what I'm looking for. How to fix playback of movies in cinemascope / ultrawide to not have bars completely around them.
