Pretty sure she’s Godzillas conscience. we know the g man has a small soft spot for humanity, maybe mothra is the reason for that. She’s the one keeping him in check, and that’s why he was more destructive and rageful in Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong. Because he no longer had mothra there to keep him calm. He lost his best friend and he didn’t want to loose his kingdom too. But now that she’s back maybe we’ll start seeing that gentler side come back.

Mothra NEVER switched sides. It's stated VERY CLEARLY in KOTM that Godzilla & Mothra have a symbiotic relationship. Moreover, GxK VERY CLEARLY stated that the Hollow Earth lived in harmony until Scar King took control of the great apes and began invading & enslaving other titans' domains. With Godzilla fighting for order and justice against the tyranny of Scar King and the great ape army, and Mothra standing for peace and harmony, WHO ELSE would Mothra align with if not Godzilla?!

Pretty sure Mothra's symbol on the Iwi tribe member in Skull island was just supposed to be an easter egg. That they have since warped into a poorly written plot point to connect Mothra to Kong, so they can be the Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman trinity combo of the Monsterverse.

My LORE ACCURATE explanation:

Im 100% sure that CANNONICLY Godzilla proposed to her in KOTM but she died, however, that made Godzilla turn into Burning Godzilla. So in GXK when Mothra was revived by Jia, Mothra was the ONLY one who could make Godzilla & Kong become allies, so when she arrived at Egypt and saw that the two titans were fighting, Godzilla was understandibly nervous. And after GXK, Godzilla and Mothra will be happily ever after.

Mothra produces immense radiation, which Godzilla needs to live. He protects her and keeps the titans in line, which she needs because she is so delicate. She taught him compassion. Thats the basis of their symbiotic relationship.
