One of the oldest and largest mosques, the Umayyad Mosque, as the name suggests dates from the Umayyad period. The mosque was completed in 715 CE. The current site was built and used as a house of worship for over two millennia. First used by the Greeks, then the Romans, followed by the Byzantines, and repurposed as a Christian church. The complex was converted into a mosque after the Muslim conquest of Damascus.
