Why Is This Church Taking 140+ Years to Build?! 🤯 | Longest Construction Project Ever, The Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, is the longest-running construction project in history—and it's still not finished! Designed by the legendary Antoni Gaudí, this architectural masterpiece features 18 spires, complex geometric structures, and breath taking designs unlike any other church in the world. But why has it taken so long? And when will it finally be completed? 🏗️⛪

Modern construction technologies have accelerated progress, with completion projected for 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death, though final decorative elements may continue until 2034. The church was consecrated as a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí". Described as an architectural masterpiece, it remains a major Barcelona tourist attraction and one of the most famous landmarks in Spain.

The Sagrada Família is an engineering wonder, incorporating hyperboloids, helicoids, and intricate Gothic and Art Nouveau elements. Gaudí dedicated 43 years of his life to this project, spending his final 15 years solely focused on its completion—until tragedy struck. He was hit by a tram in 1926, leaving the basilica unfinished. Today, millions visit this world-famous monument, making it one of Spain’s most visited landmarks.

💡 Fun Fact: The tallest spire, dedicated to Jesus Christ, will reach 172.5 meters, making it the tallest church in the world when completed!

🎥 Watch till the end to uncover the insane reason why it’s STILL under construction!

💬 What do you think? Will the Sagrada Família finally be finished in our lifetime? Drop your thoughts below!

If you consider ancient structures that took centuries to build:
-The Great Wall of China was built over 2, 000 years in various stages (7th century BCE to the 17th century CE).
-Cologne Cathedral in Germany took over 600 years to complete (1248–1880).

But for a single ongoing project, Sagrada Família holds the record.

I visited it, and it is marvelous. I also visited the basilica, our lady of peace in the Ivory Coast, the current world tallest church. It is very nice too.

Do you think it’s worth it to spend over 140 years building one structure?

There are older buildings under construction in Italy. Let me refer to a book I read about 300 year old continuous construction

Yeah, I'm sure this is what jesus would have wanted. Wasting time and materials and a whole lot of money to honor him when it could be used to house the homeless or actually something important.

Instead of being one in thousands of empty churches again.. Why don't sell this building to the Moslems community.. It will be a very beautiful mosque that will benefit the local folks there.. Specially to the poor people
