The O3DE Game Engine Takes a MASSIVE Leap Forward

Normally I dread new O3DE releases. It generally means 12-24 hours of me fighting with the build system, the installer and the project to even get a demo up and running. With the release of O3DE 24.09, all of that is a thing of the past. This release is the biggest step forward of this open source AAA game engine, based off Lumberyard and CryEngine before that, and is the closest to being ready for prime time the engine has ever been.

Hello from the guy that made the O3DE demo that appears in the video thumbnail and in the introduction! 🤘🏻

It's actually really nice to see that the engine has some resonance and people are interested in trying it out!

I definitely have to explore the new versions, I bet the developers (a lot of which I know in person) improved the usability a lot! 🙌🏻

Hi! I'm one of the community managers. There's no marketing yet, because you found it in the soft launch period. 😅

Previous releases were rocky, so the decision was made to do a soft/dark launch, then do a full marketing push after we know there aren't any major release hiccups. Like you've noted, we just released it yesterday, and there are a lot of big changes, so we didn't want to do the marketing at the exact same time, only to have something go wonky with the release, since it takes a while for things to go through the pipeline. It is coming though!

Hopefully that provides some clarity into that decision.

Really glad this release worked out, very proud of all members on O3DE for making it happen.
After working on the export launcher feature, I can definitely agree it is a massive game changer in terms of usability.

Wow! I'm impressed by their development. The interface looks really clean and professional. I'm a UE dev, but I'm going to give this one a try.

Yes please, would love more O3DE coverage. I'm seriously thinking of making a demo project from it and would love to know the usability aspect as well as how high fidelity it can go since they keep tauting that. Thanks Mike!

Those glitches look like z-fighting. The engine seems to render the collision meshes with faces, rather than wireframe.

Thank you, sir. Yes, a beginner tutorial about O3DE would be fantastic. And, if possible, about Stride3D too?

Mark my words, they had a difficult point to start from but there is so much professionalism and passion going into O3DE. When this engine is "done", it's going to kick the freakin' walls down.

I love c++ so much, if this engine gets even more polish, I might try it out for a game jam or two.

I am a pretty old guy and have been alive long enough to see some pretty incredible things.

But NEVER did I think I'd see the day GFS had an easy time installing Lumberyard.

I wanna see some Lua+ScriptCanvas tutorials for this now, I was expecting a bit more of an in depth look since o3de has basically no videos available yet

Not sure if this is the best choice for a beginner like myself but I would never have known about this engine otherwise. Thanks for getting the word out!

I've been keeping an eye on this engine since its Lumberyard days. So much potential, never achieved. But maybe now? I guess we'll see...

If it's run by the Linux Foundation, I would have thought that it'd be more popular, given the success of the likes of Godot, yet it seems that nobody seems to care all that much about it, which is puzzling. Glad to hear that it's getting better, maybe in a few years to a decade it'll be even more pleasant to use and viable for all sorts of projects.

This is incredible. People don't realize how huge this is. An open source 3d c++ native game engine that works. Can you ask for more? (I mean a Vulkan renderer would be cool but lets not get ahead of ourselves)

From years of working on Roblox, Lua is great...or at least it's something I'm used to. This will definitely be something to check out. Just wish they had more varied platform support outside of Windows and Linux.

I've checked this one out a few times in the past - great to see the progress here, worth getting back to soon it looks like!
