I remember singing this long ago, on church parade, when the world felt a cleaner place. I remember we always ended with Onward, Christian Soldiers. It felt great!

WOW! Thank you so much for posting this! I grew up in the 60's and 70's literally in a little country church that had a steeple, bell, and stained glass. I hated this music and wondered why we couldn't be singing songs like 'Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man...' lol. Now I've gone full circle and LOVE these old hymns. I remember I'd get bored during the sermons and read they hymn books (the days where parents didn't allow their children to take books or toys). I'd say to myself, "How can these writers think of so many rhyming words with cadence that makes so much sense?" Truly people of a different intellectual caliber<3 God bless anyone reading this.

I think of my grandad fighting in ww2. I was brought up with this Hymn. Now we aren't allowed to sing it. Even if I request it. God gave His one and only begotten Son to save us all if we would only repent our sins

My parents were Moslems. I went to Catholic and Methodists schools in West Africa. We sang this and other beautiful songs every morning at assembly (with prayers ofcourse) before starting classes. Even though I haven't sang them all these years I still know could sing them all from memory.
