FDA to Redefine “Healthy” Food

The Food and Drug Administration wants to define “healthy” foods as those which contain a meaningful amount of actual “food,” and America’s leading brands are outraged.

Pay attention to the corporations who are erupting over this proposal. That's the stuff you really need to avoid. If a company is getting this bent out of shape at the idea that healthy food should include actual food, that's a sign that they know they are deceiving consumers. FDA really needs to take this all the way and start enforcing a label of "food-like products". This country has spiraled into a hundreds-of-billions of dollars epidemic of type 2 diabetes, among other illnesses that are directly linked to poor diets. It is time to enforce truthful labeling of food. We are all paying for it.

I'm reminded of the commercials I saw as a kid where a given cereal was "part of this complete breakfast, " which was basically a healthy breakfast plus cereal.

Fun fact. I bought spray cheese to bait humane mouse traps. Not only did the mice refuse to eat it, but it dried to a hard shiny plastic consistency.

In a country where it's just understood corporations will lie to you in every way they legally can, it's refreshing to see the FDA push back.

Stayed in a hotel in the US once that had a vending machine with assorted sandwiches and snacks in it. None of the items had expiry dates or "Best before" and some of the things had ingredients lists that would fill "War and Peace". I have a degree in chemistry and I still couldn't recognize half of what was in the pulled pork barbecue sub. I do know that if at all possible it is best to avoid eating anything which features the word "benzoyl" anywhere on the packaging.

It wasn't until I moved to another country that I realized how utterly insane the U.S.'s breakfast cereal culture is. Letting kids eat cake for breakfast would probably be healthier.

My diet has evolved to include the Great Master’s diet (don’t eat anything they wouldn’t paint), the “don’t eat anything that doesn’t know where it came from” diet, & the “shop only the perimeter of the grocery store” diet. But honestly, my best health comes from the good sleep, keep moving, laugh, stay away from mean people, eat whole foods & cut way back on carbs (incl sugar) plan. Doesn’t mean I always stick to it, but I do my best. 😊

We need to hold ALL businesses with broad reach accountable. Their practices from start to finish have effects on the lives, and lifespans of everything and everyone. They often get rich by selling garbage to the poor. The exaggerated and misused word "healthy" has ticked me off since working at a health food store in the 80's.

As someone with many food sensitivities including being celiac, I'd be thrilled to get the chemicals out of food items. Until then, I only shop the perimeter of the grocery stores, fresh produce and meats only for this lady.
