How Italy Is Saving Itself From Drowning In Trash

Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but it's also one of the dirtiest. There's trash all over the streets of some of the most iconic cities, and it's been like this for decades. But how did it get like this? And how are these cities trying to fix it? Today, I'll be telling you how.

I don't understand how your channel is so small. Your quality is on par with channels like RLL.

When I visited Naples, it was the first time I’ve ever seen literally mountains of trash piled up on street corners. I genuinely wanted to throw my plastic water bottle into a recycling bin to keep the place tidy, but for some reason all the bins were locked. One of the restaurant owners or shop owners saw and shook his head to say I couldn’t use his bin. I gestured back using body language what does he want me to do, throw it on the floor?

I immigrated from Brazil to Portugal. And went to visit family members in Italy in the Campania region. I wasn't expecting to see how dirty and runned down were the streets. I get it that the region is not known for being developed and all, but to see that it was equivalent to my birth city in a undeveloped country shoked me. In Portugal at least you could count that you wouldn't find overflowing dumpsters on the side of the road, and I guess that I took that for granted, but it made me somewhat reasured that despite not having the best quality of life I could rest assured that they took cleaning the city a priority. Best of wishes to Italy.

Plenty of places have lots of tourist and the problem of organized crime. The problem with Southern Italy is the people. I've watched cars pull over on the highway to throw bags of trash on the side of the road, I regularly see people throw trash wherever they are, I've even seen men sip a cafe and drop the cup right out of their hands.

The people here do not care. It's that simple.

I thought my country is not clean enough but this shock me. I've changed my travel destination from Europe to Japan.

Great video! Just a precisation: there is no "Camorra family", "Camorra" is the criminal organization (like "Cosa nostra" in Sicily). There are several families (or clan) that are part of "Camorra".

As an Italian, I must say that you have explained the problem quite well, but it is complex.
The mafia is a big problem, and money in general.
Incinerators are a good solution, but first of all a good policy on separate waste collection would be good (in Italy we are quite far ahead, but there is still MUCH room for improvement)
Only at this point does it make sense to invest in incinerators, because if you did it first you would just burn it without worrying too much about collection. Perhaps though, in regions with such different habits and characteristics from northern Italy, it would make sense, to mitigate all the problems of pollution and public disorder that waste is creating.

I've been living in Rome for the past 5 years and the situation is beyond appaling. The road I live on, is pretty dense so there are dumpsters every hundred metres or so and they are always overflowing. Part of the issue is the fact that they overflow and aren't emptied anywhere near often enough. However, the biggest issue is one you haven't mentioned and it's the homeless population. I'm not exaggerating when I say I see homeless people emptying the dumpsters on a daily basis. I used to walk 2 kilometres to school and I was guaranteed to see this happening at least once a week, if not more. Btw, the tourism part is total bs. The road I live on is filled with garbage all over and cigarette butts. Despite that, this area used to be countryside until after WW2, meaning there is absolutely zero tourism where I live. I live in the Casetta Mattei/Bravetta/Silvestri area btw. I often go for runs and I can't tell you how unpleasant the smell of dumpsters is every couple of minutes. I used to live in London before moving to Rome and it was so much cleaner, which sounds weird considering London isn't really considered one of the cleanest cities. Rome makes London look like paradise. Having said that, I'll be moving to Turin (Northern Italy) for studies soon and I've visited the city before. Dumpsters there can only be activated electronically and you can't empty the dumpsters. When I went there in March, I was surprised to like it just as much as London and I'm honestly very excited to move there. I've made the best friends I could have asked for here but I just can't imagine myself living in Rome ever again if I have to be honest

How far the Roman Empire has fallen. From being known for their engineering and organisational skills and discipline, to this. Sad to see.

Omg! Yes.. how disappointing.. i found this video because i'm in the Rome area at the moment with a car.. I was previously in Florence and the difference is shocking!! Driving around is painful.. Everything is in disrepair.. the roads full of potholes and there is garbage everywhere dumped on the sides of the roads! What a shame.. It could be so much better!

Not a word about the illegal immigrants that are more than likely the culprits. Its not the fault of the native Italians!
