Enabling a scalable energy transition

The MAN B&W ME-LGIM is a two-stroke, dual-fuel engine that can run on methanol as well as conventional fuels. It provides an efficient, proven, and reliable solution, and plays an important role in the decarbonization of the maritime industry. Simple handling, storage, and bunkering of methanol, combined with relatively simple auxiliary systems and the potential to be carbon-neutral, makes it an attractive option for meeting decarbonization targets.

I'm also seeing water-methanol injection with biocrude as the main fuel being another good solution. Studies have shown that water injection in a Diesel can reduce both PM and NOx emissions simultaneously, and adding methanol also gives more power.

As for engine crew working on methanol engine, is it safe to handle methanol? In case of leakage if a person is exposed for prolonged period can there be health issue like cancer, blindness or poisoning?

Hmm do you think we could see a much smaller compression ignition (C.I) engines for cars? maybe a 800-1200cc CI engine running on MD97? Man has full sized commercial vans right - imagine fleets of Man vans/trucks dunning on something like a 1.5-3.0L MD97 CI engines all much cleaner than diesels! Surely this approach ought not to be limited to marine applications?

Have the engine been certified to run with methanol?
