Performance Diesel Tuning Fundamentals | Lesson 1 of 4 [#FREELESSON]

With many larger modern diesel engines being 'over-built' from factory, it is not uncommon to easily extract 80-100HP more with only a custom tune. It's no surprise that more and more people want to learn how this is possible and understand how it is done themselves.

It doesn't matter if you're tuning a Ford Powerstroke, Dodge Cummins, Chevrolet Duramax or something else using HP Tuners, EFI Live, SCT, EZ Lynk or whatever platform applies to your application; you're going to enjoy these lessons.

In this first of FIVE diesel tuning lessons, we'll discuss some of the advantages of a diesel engine over a gasoline-based engine. One major aspect that we do not have to worry about here is the barrier or knock/detonation/pinging limitations.

We will also look at some of the electronic controls a modern common rail setup has, basic injection timing and pressure principles, and some torque tables without our HP Tuners software.

While tutor Nick Priegnitz used HP Tuners and a Duramax for this specific lesson, the concepts he covers on the fundamentals of diesel operation are not specific to these platforms, and later lessons do use a range of other options to help underline this fact.

0:00 - Intro: Nick Priegnitz
0:32 - Diesel vs Gas: How a Diesel Operates
1:09 - No Knock/Detonation or Pre-Ignition
1:44 - Late Model Diesel Engine Advantages
2:34 - Modern Electronic Controls
2:51 - Why The Fundamentals are Important
3:08 - How a Diesel Makes Power
4:54 - Torque Tables
6:20 - Diesel Injection Timing
8:06 - Boost | VNT Turbocharger
8:59 - Injection Pressure
9:50 - Why Less Is Better
10:50 - Tuning For Power: How Much Power?
11:44 - Next Up: Software, Hardware and Sensors

How about a 2.0l TDCi MK3 Ford Focus. Can these be tuned above the base 161 BHP 120 KW 340 NM?

Is there a difference between a diesel engine with a mechanical fuel pump and one with a common rail? Is the AFR limit with full engine load the same? whats is de EGT limit? thank in advance!

So leaning a/f ration makes more power?

The accessibility for end users who want to tune their own engine, but not spend a ton of money to buy a2ls, winols, lessons is just not there. I understand how I want the engine to run, but getting info on finding maps, switches in the binary is all locked behind huge pay walls. I can't justify a winols licence for my own pickup, so I'm to the point of trying to find things in the binary and modify it directly. I mean ez lynk will do a lot of the work, but finding things like how to ignore faults is almost completely undocumented.

Interested to know more about diesel tuning, but more about vehicles available in Australia rather than the big Yank monsters.

Just put an AMG Patch on it like a real Tuner and youre fine
