You have quickly become one of my favorite D&D content providers. It's your calm measured voice and demeanor. You're a good man, Charlie Brown.

I am debating it, we'll see where the debate goes.

I can see a big difference where im enjoying solo much more. I was playing with the 2014 phb and finished a campaign and transitioned to 2024 in another campaign midway through it and it has amplified my fun factor a whole lot lol I feel like there are ao many more options. I am really happy with the 2024 phb

Because my campaign is using 5E rules I hope it’s worth it! I’m excited to check it out and the price point is very competitive. Of the new content I have seen so far I would say I like 80% of it. If that translates to the book as a whole I’ll be happy 😃

It is good to hear a nice simple review of with a yes or no answer.

I am even happier to hear your answer is yes. I enjoy hearing the opinions of players that have played through multiple editions.

I was going to buy the book anyway but your review makes me happier about the decision.

Is it worth it? For me, absolutely yes!!! I preordered the triple book and digital bundle and I’m very excited to use the new rules when they’re fully available. Anything I don’t like (divine smite as a spell, etc) I can just homebrew to how I want it and have fun from there.

I can see your point, but I must say that this book is only worth to new players or people who didn't invested much in 5e, in my opinion. The retrocompatibility with Xanathar's, Tasha's and MMotM is clunky to say the least. Also there's not that many rules updates that you can't solve with house rules. On top of that the rules, despite somewhat different, are too close with the 2014 game, making me feel like I have less options now than I had before. I'll stick with my 5e books and keep using them, even with future adventures, until this new "edition" provides enough source material that makes me think that I'm actually gaining more than losing.

I haven't bought anything from WoTC since the OGL scandal. But I just pre-ordered the PHB. The bottom line is I have the core books from every edition and I always like reading them when they come out. This seems like a good enough product that I will get at least $50 of enjoyment out of it, even if I don't ultimately play much of the new edition.

I don't have my copy yet, but I've been keeping an eye on everything that other YouTubers have revealed and I'm very excited to try everything out. Specifically, I've never been thrilled to play a Cleric, for example. For the first time, I _want_ to play a Cleric. I hadn't wanted to try a Druid until 4th Edition, but these versions of the Druid I would also really like to give a chance. I've never played a Ranger at all, but with all the controversy around it, I want to make one and see if people's complaints are justified.

Hearing your review makes me feel better about ordering the new phb as an upstart dnd player. Would you recommend buying xanathar's and Tasha's to supplement it? Or wait until later for wotc to publish a book with the missing classes.

Seems to be worth it, tbh. Although what's almost more worth the price is Foundry VTT's premium PHB 2024 module. It's got the PHB pages baked right into it apparently. i need to look into that more, as it kinda beats the pants off of other options.

One thing I can say for sure and you can compare it yourself but the print size and spaces were increased in the book. So at the end of the day with art padding. It's about the same amount of txt in the 5ebook. It runs well and I like the organization but I'm still wondering if it was really worth it. I don't feel like enough changed honestly.

There was nothing necessarily wrong with the 2014 edition. It's held up solid for a decade and has brought in a large audience of new players. From a marketing standpoint, you can't not sell something as a 50th anniversary milestone. It was smart to slightly alter the current edition and clean up some of the gray area that didn't get explained deeply enough in 2014.

I generally disagree with reviewers when they mention the book has good layout design. I think many times people confuse layout with composition (not in this particular review but I think its important to differentiate the two).
If you are to read the book as a new player from beginning to end, the general layout is okay to get a good grasp of the game. But if you are truly trying to learn its mechanics as a player, its extremely disjointed and requires immense cross referencing just to learn a single mechanic.

For example, let's say a new player wants to learn how to "Grapple".

1. They go to the index and see (grappled condition pg 367, Grappler Feat pg 204, and grappling pg 367) okay.. "grappling" seems like a good start let's go there.
2. The Grappling description firstly mentions to grapple a player uses an "Unarmed strike"....whats that? okay back to the index...
3. Index, unarmed strike pg 377
4. Okay, to make an unarmed strike you make a melee attack with an "Attack roll" ...oh hey THEY HAVE THE GRAPPLE RULES UNDER UNARMED STRIKE! ( this isn't listed at all in the index under "Grapple").
5. I now know I can grapple with a melee attack by making an Attack roll, and target makes a saving throw and hit the target DC or receive the grapple condition.
6. Great, I now know how to Grapple... but wait...how do they get out of grapple? It doesn't say here, it says to escape they have to hit the same DC but doing what?... I guess I go "grappled condition"?
7. Nope not here, I guess I go back to "Grappling?"
8. Oh here it is "escaping a grapple"
9. Oh its not a Strength or Dex anymore, its an Athletics or Acrobatics now.

Assuming I knew all those other terms as a new player, I now know how to "grapple."
compare that to 2014 PHB.

1. Index mentions "Grappling" under pg 195.
2. All rules are layed out in 1 section clearly describing a contested rolls for grappling and escaping. No further cross referencing needed.

This is just one of many examples of them actually making the game more convoluted and harder to learn for new players.
Some of the layout in the 2024 PHB is truly atrocious.

Great video as usual. I appreciate your fair assessment of the book. It appears that the new book is worth it to me. I purchased the digital copy. I will purchase the physical copy later or have it on my Christmas list. My wife and kids always say they don't know what to get me.
